Entomologists: Identify a Butterfly/Moth Species?
I have a pair of earrings which have butterfly wings made into cabochons. I'd like for someone to help me identify the butterfly or moth species, but no one has had any luck. Try to take a crack at it?
Here is a photo:
http://oi41.tinypic.com/2n1rmf.jpg
The wing is a 3/4" circle. There is no color shift. They are mainly a deep grey, with the markings a warm light grey. I have no idea where the butterfly was from, and have no way of getting this information. Feel free to take a guess, anything is helpful. Thanks!
1 AnswerZoology8 years agoChoosing Pair of Political Opposites?
I am working on a conceptual graphic design project for a fictional couple, designing a wedding announcement for a Top Secret Political Wedding. The idea is that two well-known politicians are getting married, but the wedding announcements are confidential and exclusive because the wedding would hurt their careers if it became public knowledge. However, my weakness is politics and history, so I've been struggling with which two politicians I should use. My criteria are these:
• must be well-known to the common person. As this will be a somewhat public project, it need be understandable by the masses, not just the well-educated ones
•they must be opposites in terms of beliefs, party, politics, etc. Two strongly polar people are ideal, the type of couple that is obviously radically different and make sense as opposites
• they must be American
Other than that, anything goes. The pair can be from any time in American history, can be any gender, age, race, etc. I just haven't clicked yet upon the most perfectly opposite couple, and am stumped, and would love some help. Thank you in advance.
2 AnswersPolitics9 years agoKindle 3 Problems: Frozen on Critical Battery Screen?
Last Christmas I was given a Kindle 3. I use it very often, but lately noticed that the battery is going dead quite quickly- within less than 12 hours between charging and it being completely dead, regardless of whether I read or not. I figured the battery needs replacing and I have been procrastinating. Tonight, the Kindle was displaying the Critical Battery screen, as per usual. I let it charge for a few hours, the light was green, but... it's still stuck on that page, except for a corner at the bottom of the screen that just looks like lines. I tried to do a hard reset, nothing. The light is green, so it's fully charged. Anyone know what I need to do?
4 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks9 years agoHow to Fix Bad Cat Behavior?
My two cats and I have recently moved in with someone who has two cats of his own. The process of getting everyone settled has caused some bad behavior that I need help breaking.
1. There are two litter pans for the four cats. I'm fairly certain that the downstairs one gets three cats using it, as it fills up extremely fast. I didn't realize how quickly, and it was soon so full that they pooped on the floor right in front of the box. I can understand that, so resolved to clean the pan daily. However, I came downstairs to a spotless fresh pan and poop on the floor, for no reason. How can I discourage this behavior?
2. With three male cats and one painfully shy female, there has been some tension. Luckily my two males assimilated within a week, so there have been no problems there. However, my roommate's territorial male is now bullying the very shy female. What should I do about this behavior? My instinct is to shoo him away, but perhaps that's not right. Unfortunately she is extremely thin, as she is scared of men and won't eat with them around, and his bullying her away from food is not helping.
2 AnswersCats10 years agoSelling Question- Is this illegal?
I bought several pairs of body jewelry on several websites, including eBay. Now that I have stretched, they no longer fit me, and I'd like to sell them. I would sell them for a bit less than I paid, in a lot auction. However, several of the pairs were actually bought from eBay vendors who still are selling similar or exact pairs that I own. Since I bought the plugs already, re-selling them would not be illegal, correct?
5 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoGlass Blowing Burn Name?
I am an intro glass blowing student, and I accidentally burned myself. It occurred when I was using the flat end of the jacks to shape and the blades rested on the inside of my forearm for a second, burning a long thin line across my arm. My partner, a much more experienced student, informed me that those types of burns are so common there is an actual name for it, but he could not remember what it was. Anyone know?
2 AnswersSculpture1 decade agoAre there really problems shipping from Malaysia to America?
I ordered an item off Etsy on January 2nd, and still have not received it. The seller gave me the tracking code and informed me that the tracking code is for USPS, so I'll be able to track once it reaches America, and until then sit tight, it may just be delayed. It shipped January 9th, and still not successful tracking. Why might this be? I am so fed up I am beginning to wonder if the seller shipped at all, even though they were pretty high rated.
4 AnswersMalaysia1 decade agoWhere to buy durable cat toys?
I have a large, active male cat with a strong prey drive. He loves the classic feathers attached to a stick toy, but he plays very rough, and after one play session our new toy is in tattered feathers strewn around the room. He has very strong jaws and is very fast- if he gets it in his mouth, it's all over. His grip is like steel, and I can't break it. Since I doubt I'll be developing superhuman speed or strength any time soon, where can I find more durable cat toys?
2 AnswersCats1 decade agoCat Food Portion Control- Ideal Serving Size?
I am the owner of two young male cats, brothers around 3 years old. They were adopted in May 2010, and were overweight. The short haired one weighed 17lbs, and the long hair weighed 15lbs. Over several months they have lost weight, and are currently around 12 lbs or 12 1/2 lbs each. They show nice waist definition and the ribs are palpable to the touch, but not protruding. Both cats look good at 12 lbs- they are long and sturdy, muscular but definitely don't look fat anymore. They are fed 1/4 can each of wet food in the morning (1 can is 5.5 ounces) and 1/4 cup of dry food at night.
However, they have started strongly begging for food, and I am worried I am not feeding them enough. Both cats are energetic, but the long haired, smaller one is very, very active, very athletic. He in particular seems to be trying to forage for food, digging in the trash can, taking out old cat food cans and chewing the metal rim, trying to get into the sink or whatever I'm doing while cooking. Based on this, what kind of portions should I be giving them? Should I increase their food, and if so, by how much?
5 AnswersCats1 decade agoSwitching RAM and Hard Drive between Macbooks?
I'm not big into messing around with the hardware of computers, so I need some help with this question. I have an older Macbook (between '06-'08, not sure exactly when) that I have upgraded with 4GB and 500GB hard drive. That computer's logic board has died, and I decided just to replace it. I am considering paying for a used MacBook Unibody, but I am getting it cheap because it does not have much ram or a large hard drive. Will the old RAM and hard drive be compatible with the new computer?Unfortunately, I don't have any models or anything like that.
1 AnswerLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoCat Behavioral Issues?
I adopted two cats with my girlfriend last May. They are big males who get along great. They are young- around 2 or 3- and healthy. When we got them they were obese, but after a strict diet and exercise with the vet's guidance they are lean and fit. They are very energetic, but we play with them frequently and take them out into our apartment building so they can explore while supervised. Since we moved to our small studio apartment and I have been with them more often I have discovered some behavioral issues:
1. Annoying us for food
My girlfriend wakes up at 6:00 to commute to school, and feeds the cats after her shower. They are on a strict diet, less than they are used to at the shelter, and are very eager for feedings... so eager that they try to wake her as early as 4:00. One of them will walk all over her body, and meow, for hours. We live in a studio, so locking him out is not a possibility.
2. Poop/pee outside litter pan
If waking her at 4:00 am fails, occasionally one of them will go into the bathroom and poop in the shower or pee on the bathmat. This had only happened twice, but all times it was on the weekend when they don't get fed until closer to 9:00, since we can sleep in.
3. Pawing at doors/windows
One of our cats will paw at windows, doors, and walls. It is never with claws, but the noise becomes repetitive and annoying. It is not that he expect these things to be opened- we never open the window or the wardrobe for him, and he doesn't paw doors while we are on the other side.
4. Chewing
The cat that tries to wake my girlfriend is very inquisitive and energetic, and one of the things he loves to do is chew things. It is usually wood, plastic, or metal that sticks up, like the lever on the recliner or the drawer handles under the bed, and done with great exuberance. He is very destructive. We provide chew toys for cats, but he gnaws through them, and still prefers other things.
5. Jumping on counter
The cat that paws at walls and such also loves jumping onto the counter. Our kitchen space is limited, and he will sometimes try to go in the sink and eat food scraps or investigate the stove top.
I would really like help solving one, some, or all of these issues. If you are familiar with any of them, please write in. A lot of these behaviors are damaging or endanger them (or our sanity). Let me know what you think.
5 AnswersCats1 decade agoHow to contact an unreachable landlord?
My girlfriend and I have just moved in to our first place, and we are having landlord trouble. Our first month of rent was due July 1st, the day that we were allowed to move in. However, our apartment is part of a larger building, and our landlord/the company he works for does not own the whole building. Thus, there needs to be cooperation between the building manager and our landlord. Our landlord needs to pay for our fobs and give permission to the building manager for them to be made.
However, it has been two weeks since we have heard from him, and 8 days since we were scheduled to move in. There have been multiple emails and phone calls, and he has not responded- yet he has cashed our rent check. The phone number he gave us goes straight to voicemail, or rings until it hits voicemail, he is not answering his emails or calling us back, and the address we are sending the checks to is a PO box. He is not even answering the building manager's calls or emails.
How can we get in touch with him? We cannot afford pursuing any legal issues, and I am just unsure of what to do.
1 AnswerRenting & Real Estate1 decade agoWhat is the nutritional content of pesto?
What is the nutritional content of pesto? Not just the calories, but is it high in fat, carbs, sugar, or salt, etc- if made FRESH with a recipe like this [http://www.pickyourown.org/pesto.php]. In short, is it a good substitute for more unhealthy flavors, like thick pasta sauces or mayo?

4 AnswersCelebrities1 decade agoPaid for items, they never arrived, website is down- now what?
I bought three items off of a body jewelry website called TongueStud.com. I paid for them November 20th; now, the website is down, and I still have not received my items. I do not think the website was fraudulent; it was very professional, and had good reviews. I think the business may have crashed. What should I do? I would really like my items or my money, but I have no idea how to go about getting either... I have no phone number or email address to contact them with, as the receipt was accidentally deleted from my inbox. What should I do?
3 AnswersOther - Business & Finance1 decade agoTeaching A Senior Dog To Play With Toys?
My newly adopted dog is twelve years old. He ended up in our care by chance, and we have no knowledge of his previous owner or training. He is very well mannered, but I think his last owner was harsh- for example, I don't think he was allowed in the house often or at all, or that he was ever allowed toys. He does not seem to know that they are okay for him to chew on. How can I teach him to play with toys?

3 AnswersDogs1 decade agoAdvanced Ear Stretching Question?
I need someone who has had experience with this style of plugs:
http://i2.iofferphoto.com/img/item/964/917/73/Kl2n...
I think they are beautiful, but wonder if the holes on the sides of the design would cause any adverse reactions to your ears? Maybe the skin would try to tighten and would possible sink or grow into the holes or some such. My ears are relatively large, and I know when I take my plugs out, they tend to tighten up a bit after some time passes- would wearing jewelry like this cause that to happen?
Please only answer if you have experience with this type of plug. No speculation, please! Just real world experience.
1 AnswerOther - Skin & Body1 decade agoDog Behavior: Humping?
I recently rescued a senior dog that showed up in my backyard. He is over twelve years old, deaf, does not see very well, has arthritis, and some benign tumors, but despite this, all in all is a wonderful dog. He is very patient, loving, and well mannered- no complaints.
However, he does have one behavior quirk that as a first time dog owner I am curious about: humping. He seems to hump other dogs faces sometimes when he meets them; he is neutered, so that cannot be the cause, as well as because it is dogs of both genders. He also will sometimes lick a male dog's penis. I am wondering why this is, and if it is behavior that should be stopped. It obviously looks terrible, but is it really a negative behavior? If I see it happening, should I immediately step in? If so, what kind of chastisement is appropriate for a deaf dog that likes touch in any form?
Thanks in advance, and would appreciate any and all detailed advice.
3 AnswersDogs1 decade agoChapped Lips + Vertical Labret= ?
I am usually the one answering the piercing questions, but here's a question for you all:
I had a vertical labret for a few months before I lost it due to jewelry falling out at night, but one problem I always, always had was that my lips were super chapped. As in, large pieces of skin could be peeled off my lip every few days.
Now, I want it redone, and unfortunately I work and go to school for most of the day, so constant re-hydration is not a viable option for me. I would like someone to tell me the best kind of lip solution safe for a fresh piercing. No, things like chapstick aren't effective, and gooey lipgloss or vaseline won't be good for the piercing. I need something natural, strong, and safe. Homemade remedies are fine, but if you do could you include a little more info than just the recipe?
For those who don't know, this is the vertical labret:
