Mother cat just bit one of her 4 week old kittens on the throat?

The cat was cleaning her kitten, then just lunged forward and bit a couple of times on the little ones throat, holding it for a few seconds each time. The second time, I tapped her on the head and told her no. Why would she do this?

I had a mother cat once that killed 3 out of 4 kittens in her first litter. I have heard that sometimes cats will do this. If this is her first litter, keep a very close eye on her.

I agree with Max mum does know best, she may have been stamping out behavior that she did not want. Keep an eye on her but I think she will be fine

Does she draw blood? If she does, she could be trying to kill it.

If it doesn't, she's likely reprimanding the kitten for moving around or something.
