How do I get a 9 month old kitten to stop biting humans?

We picked up a stray calico kitten about a month ago. About a week or so ago, she started biting us. She has bit my boyfriend on his lip and has bit me on my fingers, hand, and knuckles. We do not want her biting for any reason but we are not sure how to get her to stop doing this. She does not do this only when she is playing so it's not always a play reaction. Any ideas?

First of all, don't give it food, that just rewards bad behavior.

When the kitten bites you have to punish it imedeatly so it understands what it did wrong. Swatting it combinded with a sharp NO can be effective. Or you can simply turn around and completely ignore it. (Kittens crave attention)

Good answer from Connie S. I also ignore my kitty, after a scratch or bite, I do not even make eye contact. They crave attention and when you just ignore them, they get the idea that biting or scratching is not the way to get the attention they love. And no wiggling the fingers, or making them walk, I know that if fun, but the kitty has the urge to pounce. when you walk your fingers. I bet you kitten was taken from it's mother before 12 weeks. When the kittens stay with their Mom and Litter mates until 12 weeks, they bite and scratch each other and learn by the litter mates biting them back just how much it hurts. They really do not know how much it hurts when removed from Mother too early. Do not spank. Then they think this is a game, But looking at TV and not playing with them does work. If you buy feathers on a fishing pole, they can chase and pounce without associating the feathers with your hand..

Get a spray bottle of water and spray the kitten whenever it bites someone. The kitten will eventually learn by trial and error that it is not okay. You can also use this form of discipline if the kitten scratches your furniture. Good luck. It will work if you put it into practice

Use toys with long stick handles, or strings, until the kitten outgrows this stage. If your hands are near her, she will probably do it. Or, if the kitten is wound up, end the play session. But, the long sticks/strings will work and get her energy out, and provide you with comedic entertainment from the kitten.

Its a baby, it is teething. Get your calico some chew toys and play with it. It need love and attention more than ever now. Be its best friend now and in no time at all she'll have you trained as her human.

This is normal, I've owned 3 cats and they've all done this. My only advice is, when this happens, lightly tap the kitten on the nose. I've heard they find this 'annoying' and helps curb negative behavior. It will take some time thought so be patient.

Every time it bites, stick your finger down it's throat. Cats absolutely hate that and it takes them a very short time to understand what it means.

If bitten on the lip, flick her on the nose or shove your finger down her throat. Immediately after she does it. If on other body parts, I would stick with water. Face is a no no. lol. Good luck.

Simply spray her with water after these incidents. Eventually she'll learn. Just keep a water spraying container ready!

    GIVE IT SOME FOOD
