Should I stay in college or put a hold on it to travel the world?

I'm 18 years old and finished my first semester at a private college a few weeks ago. I always thought that the traditional college route was right for me, but I no longer believe that. I've been reading 'Eat, Pray, Love' and have discovered that traveling would perhaps help me discover myself. I've battled depression for many years and have led a very sheltered life (and I'm not at all accustomed to taking risks such as this); I feel as though I haven't yet started my life. Maybe traveling and experiencing new things would help me become more aware of what I am meant to be.

Oh, and I have about $16,000 from a lawsuit, so although my family wouldn't be too pleased that I would be spending it on travel rather than tuition, I can kind of do whatever I want with it.

I realize that not everyone will understand where I'm coming from, but I feel strongly in my heart that being independent and traveling could help me sort my life out.

I'm going to be completely honest with you: stay in college. Everyone who has ever been in college has considered stuff like this. I am speaking from experience.

Yes it's nice to travel the world, and it can be a great experience in college. But it is not what you seem to think it is. Traveling the world just to "find yourself" seems appealing but it really is a difficult thing to do, more difficult than you may realize right now. When I was 20 years old I decided I would live overseas. It was great. But, I was also sheltered and didn't know what I wanted out of life--which is exactly why I was not ready for something like this.

If you want to travel around for an extended period of time, my suggestion is to do so in a more productive way. Go to BUNAC.org. BUNAC offers work/intern abroad visas for college students, and they also offer overseas volunteer programs. You could also do an Israeli Kibbutz volunteer program (you don't have to be Jewish, or even religious. Half the people doing this aren't). These sorts of things would give you experience in traveling, seeing new things, working with different people cultures, and I have not met one person with a bad experience with programs such as this.

With a work/volunteer abroad program, you will have a real sense of accomplishment, it will give you a better sense of who you are and what you are capable of, and it would be rewarding. It would look fantastic on a resume. But, traveling around "for the sake of traveling around and finding yourself" gets depressing real quick and it accomplishes nothing.

Travel while you still can! Life is to short and you never know what could happen. You can always go to school, you may never have the chance or even be able to travel the world again! Experience and experiencing other cultures will teach you more then you will ever learn in school. I am not saying to do this if all you plan on doing is party, I am saying to do this if you are doing it to experience the world, see the sites, the famous places, meet the people, experience the people and their daily lives, but doesn't mean you can't party also, just not to make it you're main goal and priority, as it would just be a waste.

I wanted to travel to a few places around the globe myself and put it off thinking I could do ilater in life. Well, I'm permanently disabled for last ten years and will for the rest of my life. I can no longer fly nor even travel in a car for any length of time. I lost my chance s! Don't lose yours! But don't waste them either!

For most people at your stage of life and education travel has to be focused to be of benefit in addition to recreation. That usually means an organized study abroad program through a university in your own country. It does not have to be organized by the college that you attend. Most universities have very easy admission requirements for their study abroad programs for students at other universities.

A person who has led a sheltered life will be totally lost doing unorganized international travel at this point. The life coping skills have not yet been learned in most cases. How many languages do you speak well enough to use them all day long for everything you need to do? Do you know how to select and check into a hotel or how to find and rent a room in an environment that is safe? Do you know how to keep away from people who are involved with drugs or the sexual exploitation of young women? It is much more complicated than just saying "no".

Source(s): I waited until after my first year of graduate school to travel abroad and had received much advice from classmates who had traveled abroad after college graduation. Otherwise, I would not have been able to succeed in an independent trip. I have since traveled to over 50 countries and they do not speak English everywhere.

It depends if you want to be a successful person or not. If you do not care about your future go ahead and take that trip and spend your money. If it was my decision I would stay in school and save and invest my money. Do not use the money to pay for school, get loans. I have 3 businesses and make about $40,000 a year and I am a senior in College and graduating this coming year. A lot of people are jealous that I make a lot of money and I haven't even graduated yet and i'm 21.

How did I do this? i saved my money, I started a business with my saved money, then I opened another one with the business I made from my 1st business, then I opened my 3rd one with money from the both businesses I have. I am currently working on openeing a solar power company and currently working on starting up 2 other business online before I graduate.

Save your money, don't drink, don't do drugs and it will pay off.

I remember when I was 18 i regret drinking..now i'm 21 and I do not drink or go to bars because I found ou it's a total waste of money and time.

If I had the means to do so

I would! But don't spend it all! If it was me I would spend around $6,000 and save $10,000! And Only take a semester off, not an entire year! But make sure your safe, some other countries are not as safe as the US. Good luck!

Both! You should look into a study abroad program.
