is it legal for an employer to check your ankles to make sure you are not stealing?

The store I work at has had some problems recently about employee shrink, and now at work, they are requiring us to lift the legs of our pants so they can check our ankles to make sure we are not stealing product. This makes many associates, especially females, very uncomfortable. Is this legal?

in most states....as long as the search is not "intrusive" or "abusive"...or prohibited by a contract or union agreement...a simple "roll up your sleeves" or even light "pat down" is legal. Retail stores routinely require employees (including managers) to show a manager their purses and backpacks for inspection.

i knew a guy who worked for a jewelry maker...they had to pass through a metal detector and be weighed at the end of each day!

    It's legal.

They can't touch you, but they can ask you to show the ankles.

Besides many females already go around showing her ankles (and more) so it would be very hard to make any kind of claim about that.

But honestly the employer is wasting their time since the shoplifters will put the stuff in his/her underwear or somewhere else.

Unless someone has an ankle fetish I see nothing illegal about it. You are not being asked to expose any private parts. Stop being so sensitive and be thankful you are fortunate enough to have a job.
