What is a good manufacturer of ammo?
for a Springfield XD-M 9mm. I'm getting one in a couple days. Types of ammo I will be needing is for home defense and another for range shooting.
I have other firearms and they all like different mfg and grain. Any experts out there? Thanks in advance.

For target shooting consider Blazer brass cased ammo.... Or Winchester white box at Walmart..... I use both for target shooting and it works excellent.....
Also -- If you got extra cash - Just order some of this brass cased S&B ammo in bulk.... This stuff is pretty decent.....

For defense?..... Buy a couple of different brands of HP.... Better grade ammo - and see which brand cycles thru your gun with no failures to feed, fire or eject.... That's the stuff to use......

i like Federal. works really well with my Hi Point C9. pretty inexpensive too, walmart has them for $9/ 50 or $19/100. 115 grain (range ammo) FMJ. as for defense I just use range ammo. unless you carry (which I can't due to California gun control) range ammo is just as effective for defensive uses- it puts holes in people, doesn't it?
Wolf is also ok, 115 grain, FMJ. good for range, accurate, a bit dirty but not an issue. the steel cases have no negative affect on my gun. Barnaul, Brown Bear and Wolf are all made by the same factory in Russia, they all preform the same. Tula is from the same plant too but seems to be of much lesser quality. what i like about Wolf is that its really reliable. Sealed primer and bullet, stores long and stays reliable even if left in very humid areas or oil has gotten on the ammo.
Source(s): Hi Point C9 defense/home defense ammo is Federal 115 grain FMJ range ammo I buy reloads, LAX range reloads = $190/1000 I also handload my own ammo, got some 147 grain JHP and 124 FMC bullets for reloading. - 1 decade ago
For home defense, Glaser safety slugs. Wont travel through target, and continue on through your walls or the neighbors walls. Those are fairly pricey. Federal Hydra-shok is another good one. For the range, any FMJ shell will suffice. I get TulAmmo, they are cheap but dirty. Remingtons and Federals generally work well. You clean your pistol after shooting anyway. Check also the www.cheaperthandirt.com website. Has plenty of good information.

I'm not an expert, but even I know that Fiocchi is dang good ammo for the price.

Every gun is different and has its own ammunition preferences.
Finding what works best in your particular gun is a process of trial & error.
Below are some brands that I've used and been happy with.
Listed in no particular order...
Federal and their 'generic' American Eagle sub-brand
Remington and their 'generic' UMC sub-brand
Winchester and their 'generic' *USA* brand
Sellier & Bellot
Speer
CCI
Blazer

Remington, CCI, Mag Tech, Winchester, Federal [Except there 12 ga.] are what you'll find on my ammo shelf. I never really had any problems with them.
