What can I make in a hotel - uncooked food, or cooking with only kettle?

OK, so I work in a homelessness service. A lot of clients of mine, enter Crisis Care which means that they end up in a motel. These are really cheap and kind of not somewhere where people want to be. There is a further problem - many clients report that they have to spend all of their money (which isn't a lot) on takeaway food - as they can't cook in the room (yes, they do know about hot meals at various spots provided by various charities - but often dont have transport). Anyhows.... the rooms usually just have a kettle in them. So, cooking choices are very limited. I'm wanting to create a bit of a menu of ideas for families in Crisis Care accommodation that they can make - with the only available thing to use being hot water. I know about two minute noodles and rice, but that is it.

Ramen noodles in a coffee pot? You can toss in some beef jerky for protein if you want.

    powdered milk and cereal...

apples, bananas, pears, plumbs, peanut butter and jelly and a loaf of bread.

Fresh fruit and veggies. A head of broccoli costs about seventy nine cents. They can add that to Ramen Noodles or rice. Bananas are cheap and a very good breakfast.

Instant Oatmeal. If you take one pouch of Apple and Spice instant oatmeal then take one serving of apple sauce and add that instead of the recommended water, oh yum. It's like apple pie for breakfast.

I feel for them. I really do. But if you are hungry enough and poor enough you figure out a way. If they are getting take out and going to McDonald's. It's because they are lazy and don't want to help themselves.

Hit grocery stores close to closing time. Often times they put gallons of milk on sale because they are about to go bad. Our store does this and at around 9 pm I'm getting a gallon of whole milk for 99 cents. Just because they have to get rid of it. Also, in their Deli they cook all this food, Ribs and Chicken. They over cook. At the end of the night they just want to get rid of it. Six pieces of chicken for two bucks. And lunch meat ends. The stuff no one wants. Ask the deli people about that. They slice it to death and you got the start of the loaf and the end plus whatever didn't slice right. I can't tell you how many times I walked out with two pounds of ham for under five bucks.

You just have to be resourceful. It's not so much what you can make on your own. It' what you can get for your money.

Well, there are loads of "just add boiling water" type foods which are much cheaper than takeaways. Not exactly a healthy diet on their own, but nice to have as something hot along with healthy cold food. They're generally based on noodles, pasta or rice. And even sandwiches are nicer if you have a mug of soup with them.

they could put some hot-dog sausages in the kettle to boil them then add a bun and whala a nice hot dog!! or put some long spaghetti in the kettle and keep boiling it and add some tuna once cooked for a nice fishy spaghetti for that little extra you could even get some cheese grated in to a make do cling film wrap (make sure the tops tied properly and then put that in the kettle as well then you have melted cheese to put on your pasta.
