Liberal politicians love GOVERNMENT-RUN railroads--passenger railroads, which lose lots of money.

Liberal politicians loathe PRIVATELY-RUN railroads- US freight railroads, which are the world's best, are efficiently run and make tons of money. Liberal politicians think that the government should be able to steal their tracks and do whatever the government wants with them.

I agree that to some extent it is nothing more than an envy thing. Liberals in America always look to other countries to figure out what they want to do here. I don't know why, but it is an obvious trend.

However, I believe the main reason they love railroads is that they love any large public works project that bypasses the private sector and spreads the wealth in a way the government determines by decree. It's back to that whole socialist thing again. They like big government. Railroads by their nature are going to be government controlled from the moment the first piece of track is laid until the tracks are old, rusty and unused. Cradle to grave. . so to speak. What Liberal wouldn't salivate at the thought of that?

Because it's a metaphor for waste and poor stewardship of vast amounts of money. Libs excel at waste. Look at the mess the Democrats created with the banks and real estate, and soon, healthcare. We're all being "railroaded" out of the job and out of our homes.

Railroads created a boom in America's economy when they were first built. There is no reason to believe they cannot contribute further if they were extended and improved.

Instead of spending money invading third world countries, how about we rebuild our nation?

Railroads are critical to national infrastructure. So critical, in fact, that unionized railroad workers have been, essentially, denied the right to strike.

Yes, most of our deficit is caused by importing foreign oil. 26% of our energy needs is directed towards transportation, with almost all of it being from oil.

Redirecting our money flow would improve the US economy and National Security in significant ways

    because it works?

high speed rail is a nice and affordable alternative that can solve some key transporation issues in America, particularly with rising oil prices

EDIT: I'm pretty sure the work would be contracted out to private companies...

Other than teacher's unions, railroading is the most efficient money-laundering mechanism for tax dollars to reappear magically as campaign contribution kickbacks.

Why is the right-wing so opposed to modernized mass transit systems that would give the people cheap, fast and effective means of travel?

Why is the right-wing opposed to plans that would reduce our dependence on foreign oil?

If we are serious about reducing our reliance on foreign oil then mass transportation like rail will have to be a part of the solution.
