Ran out of conditioner during water change?

Help! I didn't realize that I was almost out of water conditioner! I have five gallons of water that I need to add to my tank, but I only had enough conditioner for half a dose. What should I do? I have goldfish...

Update:

It is a ten gallon tank, so half of the water is gone. It is too late at night for me to go get more.

Update 2:

Also, there is a reason for the large water change and the fish are being moved to a larger tank soon, so no lectures please.

Fill up your tank, and use what conditioner you have left. I have completely forgotten to add conditioner and I always change 50% of the water. Don't worry. The water that is left in the tank will dilute any chlorine you are putting in it.

    Hi Scaredwolf -

What size aquarium do you have? If your changing the water on a smaller aquarium (20 gallons or less) it is better to wait until tomorrow when you get more water conditioner/dechlorinator before you add what you currently have in the bucket. If you have a 30 gallon or larger you might be able to get away with adding all the water you have right now into the aquarium with little to no stress to your fish. Since i don't know how much chlorine you have in your cities tap water it is difficult to really say. You mentioned you have enough water conditioner (de-chlorinator) for two and a half gallons? In my experience gold fish that I keep do very well with only a little water de-chlorinator. In the years I have had my goldfish aquarium going (55 gallon) I have not had any goldfish problems when changing their water with less de-chlorinator. This could be because our water may not have much chlorine in it....yours may or may not have a lot more.

I JUST READ YOUR ADDED INFORMATION - since you have a ten gallon aquarium with half the water removed - and a bucket with enough water to fill it back up, with water conditioner added to treat two and a half gallons - I say pour it in slowly. The gold fish will have half of their old water still in there which should help dilute what chlorine might be remaining from the bucket of treated water. They should be fine. On the other hand, if you said you had five gallons of UNTREATED water I would say "no way", please wait. How about that! Goldfish are pretty hardy fish! A little water conditioner/dechlorinator is better than none!

With more information we can offer you better suggestions. :)

  • Hmmm if you were a little of generous with you first few buckets of water and the conditioner i would say it wouldn't matter too much. Why can't you go and buy some. Any non-conditioner involved fix wouldn't suffice as it requires a day or two to do it, you can't leave the filter of that long if it's a dense volume of water as the fish will drown from lack oxygen. Either buy some, or bite the bullet and hope that most of the chlorine can be removed from the already conditioned water.

how big is your tank? Some percentage of clorinated water in a large percentage of tank water will be dilluted and thus safe. If your really concerned just let the water sit for 24hrs or just get more conditioner asap.
