What should the U.S. government do in response to Terry Jones burning of a Koran?

Roughly a week ago, Pastor Terry Jones and his congregation burn a copy of the Koran. Initially, both international and local news stations in Afghanistan played down the event. Sadly, news of the Koran burning did reach the ears of the Afghan people and lead to several riots in Afghanistan. There was lose of life on both sides, rioters and defenders. The U.N. complex in Mazar-i-Sharif was attack and 7 international staff members were killed. How should the U.S. government respond to Jones' action? Prior to this event, the government was making head way in gaining the trust of the Afghan people and the government. Now, those gains have been lost. In addition, the Taliban has used the event to rally more support. Should Jones decide to hold another book burning, what should the local government do, if anything?

He can burn what he likes if he paid for it. The government should reinforce man's right to free speech by dealing with the people who think it is ok to start rioting and murdering people over the burning of a book.

Sure, I understand that to some, the Qu'ran is sacrosanct, but the facts are it is a compilation of sheets of paper. What is written down is what should be important to believers, and those words don't suddenly become meaningless or destroyed if someone burns a copy. There are millions of other copies so no one is losing out.

I don't agree with the pastor's actions as they are inflammatory and designed to cause civil unrest, but muslims should not take the bait. They should remain dignified in their response or just ignore him.

Nothing. Jones has a constitutional right to burn the Koran. NATO troops are in Afghanistan because one of the member states was attacked by elements from Afghanistan on 911. The proper response for the US government is to treat Afghanistan as a war rather than as a social program.

Karzi is the one who brought it up in a speech. It could have gone quietly away. That started the rioting in Kandahar. The UN attack killed 12 then the Kandahar riot added another 9. Terry Jones should talk to Karzi, that might put an end to this unrest.

In my opinion, the US government can't really do anything and the local government can't do anything, either. It could be considered legally wrong, but I'm no attorney or prosecutor.

Will he be paying for the necessary increased security for his church and congregation?

Mr Jones and his congregation have a right to their opinion and the right to express it. Those rights are guaranteed by the Constitution.

They hurt no one by burning a copy of the Koran.

They made a statement. That is their right.

That the terrorists on the other side of the world used that as an excuse to kill people just shows you how badly the muslim religion has been perverted

What the US govt should do is not allow any koran followers to immigrate to this country unless they are willing to follow the US culture & laws.

The koran is not a book of peace but violence.

We will not admit it but we are really in a war against Islam or at least factions of Islam. The problem is that all Islamic people are obligated to defend their brothers against foreigners so they passively support the radicals by their silence. Islam should be banned in the US ..

It is time for people to decide - if you are non violent then get out of Islam and do something else.

Nothing. Karzai has no authority over us, and we have no obligation to do anything he requests.

When the Western world demands justice on those who attacked the UN building, they most certainly hunt down and prosecute those who are responsible.

It's really quite interesting the power that Western nations have over the rest of the world.

On the other hand, look what happened to Iraq. We shipped tanks, fighters, equipment and soldiers halfway around the world an obliterated an entire nation's military capabilities on their own turf. Sort of proves the point of worldly projection...

    Nothing.

They should worry more about the behaviour of mobs of Muslim quick to murder non Muslims.

What will the Muslim world do about these vile preachers who whip up then educated to muRderous frenzies in an attempt to show how pious they are?

What kind of men of god make their followers behead non Muslims for a book burning incident thousands if miles away?

The violence is endemic and we are foolish not to recognise that.

What our US Army should do is hunt down those murderous thugs in Afghanistan and eradicate the terrorists.

This is the United States! We have religious freedom here. We can burn books here and should not be constrained by the reaction of these Muslim vermin. Is the tail wagging the dog?

Do? Well they could not put it on camera. Terry Jones is an immoral disgusting excuse for a human being, but there's nothing the law can/should do about it. His own personal responsibility should have stopped him, if he cared about people's lives. Which he doesn't.
