How do pet cats behave in such situations?

I have three male, neutered pet cats.

We leave them outside to play and roam around the neighborhood. They never wander far. Recently, we moved, not far from one house to another house,on the same road.

During the shifting, they were at the vets'. When they came to our new house, the cats went back to the old house.

We had to bring them back. Now we have to keep them indoors 24 hours a day, so that they don't get lost.

Will they ever get used to the new surroundings and will they ever be able to play outside again, without getting lost?

Please help!

My sister sometimes takes them outside to make them familiar with the new surroundings.

They need their exercise though and we don't know what to do.

How do cats behave in such circumstances and what can be done about it?

They get brain implanted on their location, so if you move, and do not keep them inside, their brain still tells them they are really living at the other place. It is usually suggested to keep them inside for 4-6 weeks to scramble their homing instincts to their old location, and imprint the new location on their brains.

My cats are indoor only, and certainly get enough exercise. Racing around the house and up and down the stairs, and on the cat trees keeps them fit.

Cats that spend the majority of their time outdoors attach themselves to that territory. It's VERY hard to get them to accept and claim new "territory." When they go outside, stay with them and play with them outside. Otherwise yes, you'll have to keep them indoors all the time for about a month or more so that they become acclimated to new sounds and smells. If you can, keep your windows open while they're in the house. You'll see them cluster all around the windows as they take the opportunity to safely inspect their new territory.

They will begin to come back to the place that feeds them, so don't worry. Depending on the cat, it will take different amounts of time to become familiar with their new surroundings, but eventually they will adjust.

They will adapt especially when they find out there is no one to feed them in the old place
