Do we need separate litter boxes for our cats?

Our primary cat may be preventing the new addition from getting to the box when she needs to go, since she has claimed the most inaccessible corner of our living room as her own. She came to us from a 4-cat household where one of the other three would attack her every time she came out. Our pet, whom we had previously thought a "chill" cat, is now messing with her after 4 days. I think that he's trying to show his dominance as primary pet. But I'm afraid she'll decide "enough is enough" and go off on him. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Update:

Both are fixed. Both have all of their claws.

I would suggest that you do. I have two cats and one litter box, but they don't mind I just clean the litter box everyday. Cats are picky so they may use the bathroom around the house instead of the litter box if it's not clean. Yes the cat is trying to show it's dominance its just like kids. The 1st born is mad and feels replaced when a new baby comes along. My cats started out like that but now they are nice to each other, hopefully your primary cat will realize that it's not so bad with a second cat around. Hope i could help :D

If she does go off on him he might just leave her alone. She might be coming into heat if hes mounting her (Which could lead to more and more and more kitties) But having another litter box is never a bad thing. I have four cats and you dont want more than two to a box. Try putting him up in a seperate room when you want her to go in the box (every hour or so) or even squirt him with a spray bottle (Walmart provides) when he tries to bully her or gets even the slightest bit agressive. It works on dogs and cats.If it gets too bad you might have to choose between one or the other as horrible as it is, sometimes the animals choose who comes in and out. Not the person... Good luck, Hope it helped!

Get another pan or two for awhile. You don't want to create a problem with litter boxes. After a few weeks or months you may find that they are ok in sharing, but for now, get one or two more and put them in different rooms.

Ideally, there should be one box per cat, then one more.

Regarding your other cat picking on her, you might try giving her a room to herself, a bedroom, etc. that he can't get into, until she gets a little more comfortable.
