Can I let my cat out onto the balcony?

I'm about to move to a high rise building on the 22nd floor. I have this amazing balcony, but I'd be so nervous to let my cat out. It's the closest he's every going to be to being outdoors.

I don't think he's dumb enough to jump off, but he does like to jump onto high things, so I'm scared he would jump up like he would on a bookcase and miss.

I know this is a silly question. I'm just wondering if you would let your cat out despite being up that high.

DONT let your cat out!! I used to live in a two story house with a railing by the stairs but my cat jumped off and broke his leg! So I moved into a one story house. Dont do it. Its not worth trying. And who is the dumb idiot thumbing down good answers?!?!

I'm assuming there is a balcony railing of some sort. Also, not knowing what the balcony railings look like (how far apart) here's what I would do:

Go to a hardware store and purchase something called weld-wire. (It looks like square chicken wire mesh.) Make sure it's at least four inches taller than the balcony railing and as long/wide as the balcony, perhaps plus a foot or so. Also buy some wire to fasten the mesh to the railing or perhaps use u-shaped fasteners to nail it at the sides (talk to the guys at the hardware store they should get what your saying and explain what you need.) Fix it so the cat can neither fit through any posts or have a clear shot at landing on the top railing. Cats are really good at judging their jumps and if he can't get a clear jump he wont try. You might even bend the part that extends above the rail over toward the balcony so it sort of hovers over his head. He won't like that and wont try to jump.

I used to live in an apartment with a balcony, and I let my cat out there, but it had a screen all around it, so there was no way he could fall or anything. If you wanna make sure and be safe, then maybe get the area screened in?

the cat will be fine so let the cat out on the balcony! but if you are still concerned why don't you put some netting or mesh from a garden centre around the balcony to stop him leaping ... safely.

Um,no lol. I would not let my cats out there! This is not like a kitty walking along side a back yard fence or even on the roof. He could land on his feet there. But not up that high. I would be terrified to let my cats out there!

I wouldn't, just in case he did get up there and accidentally fell.

If you do let him out make sure your out with him.
