Shouldn't motherboards bleep without a processor?
I've been given a motherboard (Abit VA-10) and I hooked it up to a power supply (300w) to see if it works. A light on the mobo came on, and the power supply seemed to be working ok. I expected it to bleep at me and give me an audible error code since there was no processor installed. But only silence.
Does a mobo have to have a processor installed to give error codes? Or should it be able to bleep error codes at me regardless of that?

The beep error codes and other error codes (some motherboards have LED readouts for error codes for example) are generated during POST, or Power On Self Test. This POST program is stored in BIOS, and the POST program is run by the CPU.

i don't think motherboards beep without processor, but if you have the processor installed and your RAM is not installed it will give you a beep. But again it will depend on the model of your motherboard. Hope it helps.

Usually the processing power required to do the POST test uses the processor, so no processor, no beep.

It's only the processor which makes it work at all. No processor, no bleep!

Not sure because I have never tried it, but one thought comes to mind. Did you connect a mini speaker or bleeper to it?

Not all boards beep. My board doesn't, and never will because there's no speaker!
