Cat asked in PetsCats · 10 years ago

2 cats, 2 questions.?

Hi, we just got 2 8 month old cats from cat protection. They are settling well into family life, I am wondering, when I feed them their wet food, should they have a dish each or share one? Or does it not matter? They share a dry food and water dish, just not sure about wet food. Also, when we stroke them, if they are standing on us, they press with their feet in a padding motion. Does this mean anything in particular? Thanks.

wet food is best for cats. Whiskas or Felix kitten food, until they are 1 year old, then they can go onto adult cat food. Follow the feeding instructions on the box, but I'd say you should be feeding each cat 1 pouch of cat food, 2 or 3 times daily, in THEIR OWN dish. You could give them some cat biscuits such as Go-Gat or Bekkies AS WELL AS the wet food. They will need fresh clean water at all times.

I am surprised that nobody from the cat shelter told you all this.

When cats tread on a person's knee like that, it is a sign that they are contented. It replicates what they did to their mother, when wanting to suckle.

    Hey,

I actually work for Cats protection so I could've met those kittens at the recent homing day, but I'm not sure. Anyway it's fine for them to share as long as you make sure one of them doesn't eat it all so the other one has nothing to eat. If he/she does then give them separate one, however you'd still need to watch to check one isn't eating all the food out of both bowls because usually in a pair, there is always a dominant kitten. The pressing feet thing is a sign of affection. Every cat/kitten I've had has done that and they can also do a kinda kneading action which means they think you're their mum!

Hope this helps, if you have any more questions just email me.

P.S. what are their names? I might know them.

Personally, I would give them separate dishes because even when cats get along well, there will be one that hogs the food and gets most of it. It also discourages the cats from eating too fast or gorging themselves so they throw up soon afterward. The water and the dry food dishes are fine since the cats go to them when they feel like eating or drinking and both aren't likely to be there at the same time like they would be at their regular mealtimes. As for the kneading, that's a cat's way of showing pleasure. They do that when they're kittens so they get their mothers to let down their milk. Many will continue to do this well into adulthood as a way of showing they're happy.

Assuming they have all their immunizations and such, sharing food is no problem. Just keep watch to ensure one cat doesn't start bullying the other and hogging the whole dish. (Same goes with the litter box!)

And the padding their paws on you is "kneading" like they would a mother cat, most kittens do this, and some cats never grow out of it. They're just showing affection.

I have 3 cats and 3 bowls and I feed them 2 x a day. They eat their measured amount and don't share between bowls. I only feed dry food. I don't think cats really like canned food, they just lick it at first then leave it to get dried up and old. I think you should consider not using wet food and only giving dry.

If they are happy to share and use to it even if you put two down they will probably still share lol as long as one doesn't go hungry there isnt anything wrong with it .. Padding is good they like you and are just getting comfy they would do it to there mum

As long as they're ok with sharing, then fine. Just make sure they are sharing and ones not stealing from the other.

When they're pushing with their paws it's called kneading. It's an instinct used in nursing and when they get older they do it when they're happy and content, so good job:)

It doesn't matter if you share them and the reason they pad there feet is because they are Kneading and it means they like it when you pet them and it feels good! It is completely normal! Hehe! xD
