How to get rid of cat odor.?
Recently purchased a house at a greatly reduced price because of the extreme odor. All the floor coverings have been removed. Downstairs it's concrete, upstairs is plywood sub-floor. What is the best way to neutralize the odor? We would like to do all we can to remove the smell then as the last act before replacing the floor coverings paint the floors with some kind of sealer.
This home was owned by "hoarders" or sick pigs whichever you call them, apparently the garbage/filth was about a foot deep throughout most of the house. You can see the line on the walls like a high water mark. We intend to remove the sheetrock from the walls at 4 feet high, remove any insulation, seal exposed wood with paint, re-insulate, re-install sheetrock.
Any other suggestions would certainly be appreciated.

Cat odors can be off-putting to you and your guest. Fortunately, you can use many common household items to banish these aromas without having to buy expensive cleaners. Follow these steps.
Difficulty:Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
White Vinegar
Heavy Duty Laundry Detergent
Apple Cider Vinegar
Baking Soda
3% Hydrogen Peroxide Solution
Brush
Vacuum Cleaner
Old rags or cloths
1
Reach for the vinegar. Unfortunately, the most common source of cat odor is from cat urine which can settle into hardwood flooring. One of the most tried and true solutions is a 3:1 mixture of warm water and white vinegar.
2
Saturate the spot thoroughly using an old rag or cloth with the white vinegar and water solution. Dry the area completely and repeat the process. This will save your hardwood and linoleum floors and remove that foul stench that Tabby left behind.
3
Save your carpet too! You can use a similar method to rid your carpet of cat odors but it will take a little extra effort. Apply the white vinegar/water mixture as previously described.
4
After drying the area, sprinkle some baking soda over it and mix in 3/4 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution along with one teaspoon of a quality dish detergent. Apply this over the baking soda. Use a brush (that you will discard) to work it all into the carpet. Then vacuum it up when done.

Ugh! Get that smell out of clothing! If heavy duty laundry detergents fail to eliminate the odors from your clothes, try applying a small amount of apple cider vinegar (1/4 cup or less) along with your laundry detergent. Your clothes will smell apple fresh and that nasty odor will be gone for good!

Could you get rid of the padding? Probably a lot less expensive than new carpeting. That's a big problem with liquids on carpets--you think you get the stain/odor out, but it's still in the pad, and it comes back. There are some enzymatic stain and odor removers out there--you could call a local vet clinic for some specific recommendations. Urine Gone, Pet Odor Eliminator, Nature's Miracle, and OdoBan are just a few. If you do get the stain/odor out, you might want to ScotchGuard the carpet to help if it happens again. And if the cat is an unneutered male, having him neutered will reduce the odor of his urine and probably cut down on inappropriate elimination. Good luck--I know how tough that odor can be to remove!

If you can get under the house downstairs, you might be able to neautralize the oder by spraying the sub-floor with a white vinegar solution and let it dry before you try to seal it. Actually, I would contact a wood flooring place theyhmay have the best solution to your problem. I had to do this iin my last house for dog pee. Good luck.

any ammonia free cleaning agent should neutralise the smell like white wine vinegar
a trick i saw on the "how clean is your house" show would be pouring instant coffee all over the floors-like coat the floors in it and leave it over night before sweeping or vacuming it all off again, it absorbs smells, and neutralises, your house would only smell like coffee for a day or two then all smells would be gone
I've hadn people who come in and ask me the same question, when there cats have previously been spraying indoors and they all said it worked too
