Why weren't the Twin Towers rebuilt?

The reason that the Twin Towers were not rebuilt was because an arrogant Governor thought his opinion mattered more than the will of the people, who overwhelmingly wanted to rebuild the towers from Day One and still do.

It was never a question of building 40-year old buildings, but state-of-the-art Towers that would restore the skyline and be a tremendous improvement on the generica that is going up now. They would incorporate all the advances in construction, technology, safety, and environmental standards of the current plan -- and then some.

So much for the "Rise of Freedom" -- more like the "Mugging of Democracy." But how can the people really be expected to understand the matter, when the media does nothing but regurgitate Silverstein and Port Authority press releases?

Two majestic towers that were enormously popular with most Americans were stolen and the best we can do is replace them with one phony baloney building that is exactly the same height as the Twins, but claims to be the tallest tower in North America because of a 400-foot stick on top. New Yorkers aren't used to stretching the truth to be the best -- we earned the reputation for being the Big Apple -- not the Fake Apple.

The other three buildings do not compare -- and two of them may never be more than stumps, regardless of the propaganda. As for not wanting to make the towers targets again -- anything that is built there will be a target -- as is the Empire State Building, the Sears Tower, and on and on. Most of us do not want to cower before criminals, but new Twin Towers would be the safest towers on earth.

To say that the American people wanted a Freedom Tower shows how easy it is to fool some people, who then pass on something that is in direct opposition to the facts. As Winston Churchill used to say, a lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. Or as Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.

The Internet aggravates that tendency to spread rumors and half-truths, but when it comes to the Twin Towers, the facts are clear. Even though rebuilding what was attacked is the honorable and time-tested response to acts of war, The Twin Towers were not "brought to the table" because of a corrupt effort to suppress what the people wanted, which is a subversion of democracy -- not because it never came to mind!

An MSNBC poll in early 2009 found that 92% of respondents -- over 2500 people, which is a very large sampling -- wanted to build the fully re-engineered Twin Towers II plan instead of the Freedom Tower plan. And considering that the lion's share of the property is being built with public funds, that matters.

The Twin Towers were built with collisions with airplanes in mind after a bomber that was lost in the fog collided with the Empire State Building in 1945.(1) Architects designed the Twin Towers to resist a collision with a Boeing 707 (the largest plane at the time). The planes that crashed into the Twin Towers were the same size as the 707. And most of the fuel in the planes ignited when the planes collided with the buildings.(2) To answer your question, the Twin Towers will never be rebuilt.

The twin towers were not rebuilt for a multiple of reasons, during the design competion , nobody brought the idea to the table, so the thought never came to mind, i guess. Secondly, As Americans, we do not look back, rebuilding the original trade center towers is acting like nothing ever happened, The Freedom tower is a marker, it shows where everything happened, you automatically know when you look at it. The Freedom tower represents freedom , just like the spire that brings it to 1776. We remember the past and honor the future

Twin Towers Being Built

The World Trade Center IS being rebuilt. The Freedom Tower was names One World Trade Center years ago. There are FOUR towers under construction.

The original towers would not be rebuilt because a) they wouldn't meet today's building codes for life safety and b) they are obviously easy to knock down.

The WTC was actually obsolete as a building even before the planes struck. They were built in an era before the Internet and when gasoline cost next to nothing. Today, people working in a converted Farm House in New Hampshire can do everything and more than staff in a Office at the WTC.

It's just a different name. The name ''Freedom Tower'' is to symbol that the building is a sign of freedom in the United States.

why do you think they wanted the twins gone? because they were losing money on it, those towers were gigantic and not enough people were willing to pay to hire.

The American people wanted a freedom tower, and we're getting it.
