What does it mean when a cat's eye tears?

Our cat (2.5 yrs) has one eye that tears just a bit every once in a while. It's always the same eye and without any apparent reason like something he's bumped into or anything.

Update:

He is an indoor only cat. He's not sick. He has no eye infections. Just a single, clear tear every couple months. That's it.

It means something's irritating the eye. It could be an allergy, and eye infection, a mild injury, an oject or dust or dirt in the eye, or other causes.

I've noticed that some cats seem to be prone to eye infections, while others never get them.
