What is bad - my motherboard or CPU?

I bought a used computer at a yard sale for parts. I decided to try it out and found out that after powering it up, the CPU fan turned on. Nothing else worked. I had no LED power light and no display on the monitor. The RAM was tested on other computers as being good. My guess is the CPU, but I'd hate to buy a CPU only to find out it was actually the motherboard. The CPU is an AMD Phenom X3; model number is "HD8400WCJ3BGD". Is this CPU even compatible with this motherboard?? What do you think?? Be as specific and detailed as possible. Here is a pic of what the motherboard looks like:

Check the capacitors on the motherboard to see if they're bad. They look like this when they are: http://www.eventlogblog.com/blog/2008/01/18/Bad.jp...

The top should be totally flat and not have any brown marks on them. If any of them are like this then the board is bad and you have to replace it. It's not exactly the nicest board out there so I would say it's the board and not the CPU.

You really have to tell us what happens when everything is hooked up and you press the power button.

You say you had no display on the monitor. If the monitor won't even flash to another blank screen then your motherboard is bad. Chances are it would be the motherboard anyway since there's a lot more that can go wrong with the motherboard. Voltage Modules, Caps or something else could have burnt out.

So, is the motherboard compatible with that processor? Well it looks like it would but... according to this link it doesn't. The BIOS may not support your Toilman processor.

I would physically inspect the board first. Rule out any possibility that the board is damaged.
