My 16 y.o cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidsim a little over a year ago. I started him on the transdermal?

He has now lost 5 more pounds and vomits almost every day, sometimes just water not food. The vet did complete labs yesterday and just spoke to him, the cats T-4 is very high, 24. He told me to increase the meds to 3 twists twice a day and call him Monday morning. He has thrown up water twice early this morning and I just got him to drink some more water. He refuses food and just wants to sleep.

I am really worried, I have real difficulty giving him Pepcid AC in the past but wonder if I should try again now to get him eating. I admit I have forgotten the meds sometimes in the past but not for past few days. Help.

For the meds, are you cleaning the ears? If not, it can really help the medication absorb better. Clean with water daily and every couple of days you may need to use witch hazel to get all the residue off. Also it helps to alternate ears. Also it is best to increase the medication slowly and check the T4 every 3 weeks until he is stabilized. 3 twists for an increase sounds like it may be a big increase, depending on how strong the gel is. You will have to check the prescription on the gel but it's best to go small, 1.25 mg or 2.5 mg at a time, then wait 3 weeks to let the new dose have it's whole effect, blood test, then increase again if needed. Otherwise you can end up with a big swing and send him hypOthyroid which is a big problem also.

I do agree radioactive iodine treatment may be a good option. Generally hyperthryoidism is caused by a tumor. While most thyroid tumors are benign, they will continue to grow so most cats need more and more medication over time. It's a good idea to get his blood checked every 6 months when he's stabilized to keep an eye on that. But the radioactive iodine can "cure" the cat because the iodine targets the tumor and kills the tumor, and only the tumor. Something like 94-96% of cats need no further treatment. It can be pricy and sometimes not offered locally but ask your vet about it. If your cat has other issues like kidney disease or liver disease, he may not be a good candidate.

Yes, worth it to try the Pepcid AC. However you can get it in him, pill pockets, poking it down his throat, or using a pill popper. Also he needs to eat no matter what. If he refuses, use an oral syringe. Get a pate canned food and mash it up with a little water. You can use the oral syringe to force small amounts at a time. Most cats need at least a 5.5 ounce can of food a day to survive, possibly more depending on his size. If you don't get food into him quickly, he's at higher risk for fatty liver disease. You can also try tempting him with his favorites.. cooked or raw chicken, beef, turkey.. no seasoning of course. If he likes meat baby food, that's great too. Just read the label and make sure there's no onions.

And yes - there is a Yahoo! group with a pile of knowledgeable ppl. I swear they know more than the average vet - because they have actually networked with the leading hyperT experts. They also document results from all the group members and have amassed a library of their own "research." The group's called feline-hyperT.

For some cats the med just does not work well. Is there any way you might be able to get him the radioactive iodine treatment?

It's worth trying for a while more to see if the increased dose will help. but that is very scary that he lost 5 more pounds and is vomiting daily. So seriously stay on top of this. Do whatever you need to to make sure you remember to give it. Set an alarm on your phone to go off daily at the times for his meds. get back to the vet for another T4 test and to weigh him again in a few weeks as soon as the dose increase should have had some effect.

Yes try the Pepcid AC it may help. maybe you could put it in a little bite of meat or cheese? You know you also can get injectible famotidine. If he's really hard to pill that might be preferable.

To pill my cat, i take hold of his upper jaw , tilt his head back, then with the other hand which is holding the pill I pull his lower jaw down and drop the pill right in. Then still holding onto him I rub his throat to make sure he swallows then I feed him some wet food with a little water added, to wash down the pill. If he would not eat I would syringe some water in.

I would give him the Pepcid AC and then try to get him to eat some bland food. maybe some turkey or chicken baby food

I bet there is a Yahoo Group for caregivers of cats with hyperthyroidism. why don't you look and if there is an active group join that. If my cat's HT gets worse I will definitely be looking for a specialty forum for that topic. (my cat is currently on oral methimazole and so far that seems to be helping him.)

Hyperthyroidism will kill kitty if meds are not properly maintained. If he has been off food try some baby food like chicken, also if he still refused force feed him some chicken broth and Gatorade. Buy yourself a needless syringe. You need to keep his sugar level up in order to bring back his appetite.

At this element there's no such element as "passing away in peace." She is hurting. it relatively is why she would be able of not circulate. i'm relatively sorry, even though it's time to do the humane element and positioned her down :-( you have long previous above and previous what maximum cat proprietors do. it relatively is sparkling you enjoyed your kitty all her years. the best of her years have been spent with you. Leaving her to "die in her sleep" may be much less confusing for you, however the animal heavily isn't slumbering whilst it finally is going evidently. she would be able of be very distressed... making noises, etc. i don't prefer to belabor the element, yet from the form you have dealt with her it relatively is sparkling you do not choose her to go through. i'm so sorry.
