adopting an outdoor kitten?
i am adopting the kitten, about four months old, of a feral momma cat. the kitten has been handled by humans since about 10 days old and is quite friendly. she has been vet checked and is healthy. however, she has lived outside her whole life and knows nothing of litter boxes. i have 3 indoor adult cats. any suggestions on litter training her? confinement to a small room with a litter box is my only thought thus far. thanks.

here's what to do:)
get a small litter box that your kitten can easily climb in and that is good for starters.
Fill the box with a good non-scented, non-clumping litter to the depth of three or four inches.
Place the litterbox in a quiet, private place away from her food dish, but easily accessible to him/her. Put a mat underneath to catch any litter thrown out by busy little paws.
Immediately after feeding your kitten, pick him/her up and gently place him/her in the litterbox. Scratch the litter a little with your fingers so she can get the idea.
If she goes, praise her profusely. If she doesn't, watch her closely for indications of wanting to go elsewhere.
The instant you see her squatting, pick her up and gently place her in the litterbox. Never throw her in or scold her--it will only associate the box with unpleasant memories in her mind.
Every time she uses the box, praise her profusely. You want her to associate her box usage with pleasure.
Keep the box immaculately clean, by scooping it several times a day and changing the litter and washing and disenfecting the box at least twice weekly.
also once you've found a good litter and box location, don't change it. Subtle changes can often cause a cat to forget its previous training.
good luck=)

Most cats, once they know where the litterbox is will use it on there own without help. I am fostering two kittens that I got when they were 4 weeks old and they used the litter box from that age on (there now 6 weeks).
Also, don't let the kitten be outdoors. My cat was an indoor cat and escaped outside and we found him dead. It was the most heartbreaking thing i've ever gone through, and I wouldn't wish it upon anybody else. He was only 6 months old and when he got out my dad thought it would be okay but no, it was not. Just because your cat was born outside doesn't mean it needs or wants to be outside.

I have 4 rescues. I showed them the litter box, took them to it a few times and they just know what to do. She will follow the scent of the other cats and use it. It would be a good idea to have 2 litter boxes as sometimes a cat will get very possessive of the box when a new cat comes in.

Cats will automatically go in a litter box, all my cats have been strays and they went right to it Kittens included. Have you set her in the box yet ? if so maybe she needs her own box without others feces. Other than that you could get dirt from outside to put in the box, but you need to set the cat in the box !. I have had baby kittens know to go in the litter box very early on, thats why cats rule and dogs drool !

I used to take in cats for foster care, most were outdoor cats, all learned to use the litter box. And they were just fine being indoor cats. I think the free food, water, and warmth in the winter was the clincher.
More important she if friendly and used to humans. enjoy your kitten.

Get another litter box. According to the experts you should have 5. I watched my kitten learn things from my other cat , she'll be fine.

okay if your bringing a outdoor cat into a indoor place, is she allowed to go outside because i have two farm cats that were outside kitties and they use the litter box but not very often.. they are more like dogs.. they go outside to go for the washroom and come back.. your cat is gonna wanna go outside so you dont necessarily need to litter train her but best of luck it didnt work well with our cats.

Use soil instead of your typical kitty litter, you can mix it in with traditional cat litter gradually. Thank you for being a hero! : )

To litter train her, just show her the box and 'scratch' her paw in it, like she were digging in it.
It is a cats instinct to bury their mess, so she should take to it easily.
