Which Shotty? Mossberg 930 SPX vs. Remmington 870 Express Tactical?

Santa might be putting a shotgun under the tree for me. Which one would you choose and why?

MOSSBERG 930 SPX

Or

REMMINGTON 870 Express Tactical

Update:

GREAT answers so far gentlemen! I own pistols and this will.be my first and most likely my only shotgun. I like the 870 simply because of its awesome track record and almost limitless upgradability with accessories on the market. However, the Mossy seems like an awesome shotgun to have due to the semi-auto nature of it. I like the site picture on it too with the fiber optic and ghost ring sites. Down the road my next acquisition would be an AR. But for now, I just want one Shotty... just still tryimg determine if paying a bit extra is worth getting the 930 spx over the 870. If I were comparing the Rem 870 to a Mossy 500, I'd go 870 all the way. But I believe the 930 SPX is not priced much higher than the 870 tactical version (the one that Co

es with the breacher choke) then all of a sudden the 930 becomes more attractive and not such a far stretch... LOL

Depends if you prefer auto or pump.

The 930 SPX is a great tactical shotgun and frankly I think it may be a little better quality than the Remington (their QC seems a little patchy lately)

The one HUGE advantage the Remington has is after-market accessories. I bought a 930 combo package and figured I could buy a few add-ons later to make it a little more effective. Wrong. You can find a few items for the 930 if you really dig while every sporting goods store in USA has accessories for Remington.

BUT 930 SPX shouldn't need much - pretty awesome weapon right out of box

The 930 SPX. If I was to get a shotgun as a gift, I would opt for a semi-auto if it was being offered. You can buy the 870 Express Tactical from any major sporting goods chain any time, and they go on sale at least once a month. The 930 SPX is harder to find, more expensive, and does not go on sale as frequently. And the quality of Mossbergs is very good - I believe the 930 SPX was voted shotgun of the year 2 or 3 years ago. Did I mention it's a semi-auto?

Both produce quality shotguns and if you put together owners of each together in a committee they would come to as much agreement on the best shotgun as the recent Congressional Budget Super Committee did in cutting the budget deficit.

Do you want and autoloader or a pump? The mossy is an autoloader and the rem is a pump. Pumps are said to be more reliable, because they are simpler, but modern semi-auto firearms are pretty reliable. I believe that the Mossberg 590A1 SP or SPX is a pump and a better comparison with the 870 you mentioned.

Some of the "tactical" models have pistol grip. I do not recommend a pistol grip for most users, unless you are on a tactical entry team. I do like ghost ring sights, however, especially when shooting slugs.

Note that I believe most police departments that buy 870s get the police models and not the consumer "express" models (as Dan suggested).

The Remington 870. They are both nice guns but Remingtons have always been of higher quality than Mossbergs and the Express models can shoot rounds off faster than you can rack them into the chamber. Most law enforcement and military agency's use 870 Express.

The 870 is also much easier to take apart and clean or change barrels on. It's also the easiest to find after market parts for.

Like said both are great I think it all comes down to preference. I hate, hate , hate the release being up front on the Remington, but love the ease of take down and modification compared to the Mossberg. Also it just may be where I am but you can tend to find a lot more after market parts for the Remington locally. Can't go wrong with either though.
