If you get married in another country is it legal in the US?

A couple years ago I got married in another country (Ecuador) to an Ecuadorian citizen (I'm a US citizen) and need to know if the marriage is valid in the U.S. We went to the courthouse there to get the marriage license. We don't really talk anymore so I'm not sure if I can just forget the whole thing ever happened and get married in this country or if I need to get a divorce first, and if so, how would I go about doing that? I never filed for anything here, but I do still have the marriage license from Ecuador.

Update:

No, we didn't get married for him to get a green card, we were just young, dumb, and in love (at the time). Would I go to an embassy here to file for divorce?

yea its very legal. i just got married to a Peruvian citizen last week and i am from Vermont USA and legal already in the states, they told me in the courthouse were i got the marriage certificate that my marriage information would be sent to the American embassy within the week and Ecuador and Peru are very much the same with there laws. but i would call your nearest Ecuadorian consulate for the divorce.

Of course it is. See they call that bigamy.

There's been more than one really comical divorce where someone who thought they were getting half got squat because of a valid previous marriage.

You can get a divorce in many states just by stating you've lived apart with no contact for a period of time. That's how Reno got it's start as a tourist destination.

Oh and if you did it to get him a green card, you committed fraud.

he may not be talking to you now but he could come back to haunt you later. Contact your nearest US embassy and ask them how to proceed. Do not think you can just brush it under the rug.
