How to make my cat stop sleeping with me?
I adopted a male neutered cat from my local humane shelter. He is 2 years old. He insists on sleeping right next to me at night. He is a good sized cat and takes up a lot of room and is very pushy. I have tried to shut my bedroom door but he will scratch at the door and meow very loudly. I have tried putting him down everytime he gets on the bed. Nothing works. The cat has the run of the house so there is plenty of other places he can sleep.I am running low on sleep and ideas. The cat doesn't want to play, he just wants to sleep as close as he can possibly get to either one of us. I feel bad for him so I give in to him but my lack of sleep isn't working out for me, since I have school. Any ideas would be more than welcome.
*I've had him for a week now
I would never spray my cat with water, that's just mean. He is such a sweet, lovely cat. And I can't really be happy when I wake up extremely tired. It's hard to fall asleep too with the cat on the bed :/

All cats are individuals. Whatever a cat's personality, it's NOT changable.
If he happens to be clingy, that's the way he's going to stay. However -- if you just got kitty out of a shelter, don't you think he's going to be a bit traumatized? Wouldn't YOU be?
He's trying to attach to you and is very insecure at this point.
Give him time, and let him sleep where he wants. (You're not going to change it, whatever you do, anyway)
If you roll too much in bed, believe me -- he'll move if it bothers him.
Don't worry about it. Some cats just don't care how much you move in bed. They stay put.
All you can do is give it a few months. If it changes after that, you know it was stress from being in the shelter. If not, you know it's a personality quirk, and it's not going to change.
PS I'm sure there are lots of people who would want him if you don't -- I had a siamese that did that (slept next to me under the covers) for 15 years, till the day she died. They're VERY rare.
When you find one that does that, that's a special bond.
Good luck!

Well, normally I would say good for you as most people enjoy their kitty being so affectionate.
Though I think I understand your problem. One solution involves a trip to petco (or petsmart), there are products there that can very easily affect your cat's behavior. One in particular is a calming spray, its virtually odorless to humans and cats love it. Just lightly spray various areas where you want your cat to sleep and show him those areas, or just get a kitty bed and spray that and it will quickly become his new favorite place to sleep.
I started using one of these on my 13yr old, since she enjoys sleeping on an old towel in the closet I sprayed it with a calming spray I got from petco, now I can hardly separate my cat from the towel and she will sleep wherever it is.

Since you say you only have had him for a week, I would suggest waiting to see what he will do. He's still adjusting to his new home and is sleeping with you because he feels insecure. Once he settles in, he probably will find other places to sleep that he likes better. Besides, most cats don't stay in the same place all night. They periodically get up to eat, stretch, use the litter box, and then go to another favorite place they like to sleep.

How about that? And I have the opposite problem which is I cannot sleep without my kitty! I sleep with my Chihuahua and my 10 week old kitten right beside me and I love them both and I know they just love me so much! I prefer to know that my animals are sleeping soundly and safe than to have them be running around the house while I'm not watching them, especially the kitten since she is still so young.

That means the cat really likes you! Try to give him a place to stay or get another cat to keep him company.

Hmm, you could get him a nice soft furry pet bed and place it on the floor next to your bed so that you can easily reach down and touch him. That is what I do, and my cat loves his little bed next to mine. I give him a pat and he falls asleep there.

Your kitty loves you! Be happy- cats don't usually behave that way!
