What kind of lamp do you have in your kids' room...?

Do your kids have a lamp in their room? Also what kind?

I'm looking for a small lamp, of course a safe one, for my kids' room :) . Neutral color.

I've looked around and most of them are either too baby nursery looking or would be a hazard in my 3 yr olds room lol.

Any links would be great too. Thanks in advance :)

My 9 year old son used to have just a small old lamp that my grandmother left me in her house when I moved in after she passed. He *had* to have it on at night when he went to bed, 60 watt light bulb and all. Now that he and my 3 year old daughter share a room and she does not like bright lights when going to bed, I bought a lava lamp.

Lava lamps may be, or probably are, considered hazardous but they know not to touch the lamp itself, ever, only use the switch connected to the cord to turn it on. So far no incidents.

As far as suggestions, I would probably just go to Wal-Mart and find a plain one that is safe. Something like this, http://www.walmart.com/ip/Grandrich-Ceramic-Lamp/1... , would look nice and simple. They also have it in black.

  • I've tried keeping a lamp in my daughters room. but the problem is that she is 2 years old, and the lamp just doesn't have a chance. lol. She breaks or destroys it always within the week. No matter what i do. Even if its put up high, a toy gets thrown at it or something, so yea. i just don't keep lamps in her room anymore, not til she's older anyway. i just put a night light for her in the wall every night, because she's scared of the dark.

In my four year old stepsons room we have a floor lamp behind his bed, so it goes over the bed for reading, its wrought iron with a white shade over the bulb. On his bedside table we have a revolving night lamp, which is a really dim lamp with a black revolving shade over it with shapes cut out, so it projects pictures onto the walls, we use that as his nightlight. On his dresser we have an old lamp that was handed down through my husbands family, it was in his room as a child, was one of the few things he was allowed to take with him, its actually a really cool lamp. Its a normal table lamp, but the base is made of glass and inside is a miniature figurine scene of a man riding a horse through a snowy forest, the more you look at it you see more little details hidden in the trees, like little deer, birds, and a creek. In my 12 year old sisters room (Im her guardian) she has a wall lamp over her bed that has flowers and an angel carved in the base, a porcelain lamp on her dresser thats creme colored with flowers, and one of those library desk lamps with the green glass shades on it on her desk. I think you should find something not too babyish, but still kid friendly, like this:

or maybe something more grown up and simple, like this:

Just make sure that he knows to be gentle and careful with it and put the cord so he wont trip on it.

  • When my kids were little I just a regular old small lamp on top of their dresser where they couldn't reach it. The dresser was in front of the outlet so they couldn't get to it or the cord either. I never had any issues... they were never really into throwing things inside....LOL

What constitutes a hazard? There are desk lamps with clips that you can clamp onto a shelf or something to keep it up high and prevent it from being knocked over.

I bought cheap ones at Wal-mart when they clearance out their college dorm stuff - one is a blue ceramic ball the other is just a simple pole with a base. the ball is up where they can't reach it and used as a dimmer light than the overhead for calming down/night time. The other is wood and set up on a shelf behind a chair to read books. They had striped shades with them so we bought curtains with those colors in them. They were for my son and simple enough to go in the nursery with out being "baby".

My daughter has a children's bedside lamp and my boys have bunk-beds so they have children's wall lamps. They are quite neutral and all three have a cover to stop little fingers touching the bulb. I got them all in IKEA. They don't sell the exact one anymore but something similar

this is similar to my daughters http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/2015065...

and my sons have one similar to this http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/8017259... or http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/8014992...
