My two cats hate each other. What should I do?

I have a cat, Bella, who is 11 years old. About two weeks ago, we took in another cat who needed a home. Bella can't stand him. I know that this is normal, but after two weeks we still have to keep them separated because sometimes when we let them interact they will get into a fight and the last time a vase got smashed, chairs were knocked over and they were biting and scratching each other. I'm really scared that one of them is going to kill the other. We've been trying the damp cloth thing that the vet suggested (rubbing them with the towels and then switching so they will get used to each others' scent) for a few days now but they are still hostile towards one another. If anyone experienced with introducing two cats has any suggestions or advice, please let me know. How long does it take for cats to tolerate each other?

Get a Feliway diffuser. It emits a pheromone that only cats can smell. It can calm them from fighting. It does not work on all cats though. Give it two solid months before deciding it doesn't work. If you have a very large house or multiple levels, get one for each level or each end and inbetween.

Your vet has a good idea with the rubbing their scent on cloths and sharing the cloths thing. Keep going with that, and when they're separated, try to keep them in adjacent rooms so they can also still smell each other under the door.

Also, sometimes cats just need to fight it out. They're trying to determine the pecking order and who's in charge at your house. If they're fighting so hard that they start drawing blood, then yeah, you need to break it up, but seriously cats can wail on each other and SCREAM like they're dying when they're just trying to show the other cat who's boss. If they're not drawing blood, just squirt water on them for being annoying.

And if this keeps up for over about 2 months, I'd consider finding another home for this new kitty.

All cats are different, but it looks like your cats are going to take longer. Do get a pheromone plug-in - it will help the cats to calm down. The more fights they have, the longer it will take them to accept one another. So don't rush the great get-together.

I took in 2 cats 3 years ago. I already had 3 cats, but my friend died and I had promised to take her cats. One of them had adapted to my cats and was mixing with them, on a limited basis, within a week and friends within a month. The other cat didn't come out at all for 3 months and took nearly 2 years before he could be left on his own with them. In fact, we still have to take one of our old cats away sometimes just to give him a break. He has his own room that only he is allowed into. I have accepted that they will never get on, but after 2 years they have learned to tolerate one another for limited periods.

I have had cats for over 50 years and this is only the second time I have had cats who will never accept one another, no matter how long they know one another. Before we accepted they had to be permanently separated, my old cat nearly died from stress triggered illness.

Many cats are rather territorial. That means that when the new kitten arrives, their thoughts are something like "What is this HORRIBLE INTRUDER doing in MY HOUSE?" But you can change your cat's thoughts on this subject. It may take some patience on your part, but it can be done. Take a look at DearTabbyTheAnswerCat.com. They have an excellent article in "Cat Care" on "How to Introduce the New Kitten/Cat to Your Cat." Helpful!

For starters, get the two between the fastened, and as much as I hate asserting it, your declawed cat ought to be an indoor cat for cover motives. might it relatively is conceivable to locate a house for the female, or get a typical (as in 50% of your front room) cage the place she ought to completely stay?
