How often do you give your cat treats?
Do you give them treats everyday? Only as a reward for doing something good? Occasionally or never and how many do you give?
I give my cats Temptations treats when I'm gone for several hours returning home after dark which is at least once a week. How many I give depend in how often I go out that week. If its the only day maybe abt 3 treats each. I'd I'm going out a couple or more times maybe just one each for each day.
I will also reward them if they help me catch a spider or bug.
Also after any meds or vet visit or nail trim. Those don't happen everyday tho.

You should Never give your cats packaged treats! There are frequent recalls of this type of product ~ they easily cause intestinal blockage and death.
What to do instead? I give my cats "treats" every other day or so ~ a treat consists of a small portion of "special food". This can include a can of food, or bugs when i am energetic enough to catch them (they LOVE moths, grasshoppers and crickets ~ waterbugs make great toys) OR I give them a piece of raw meat ~ boneless chicken thigh meat cut in a 1" x 3" piece is an awesome treat ~ give them once a week for oral health. They have to tear at the meat and really chew on it and it acts like a toothbrush.
I have a treat "command" with my cats ~ I say Chick Chix it a high animated, excited voice. I only use treat command when I really have a treat to give them. I can use this command in emergency situations ~ if there was a fire ~ or the cats is doing something Dangerous ~ if there was a stray dog coming ~ I can yell Chick Chix and all my cats will RUN TO ME. If you develope a treat command you also have an emergency command that gets your cat to come to you NOW. Treat command is also a fun way to develope a deeper bond with your cat ~ but never tease with it ~ if you give the command give a treat.
I also use my treat command when I want Jackson to get after a bug I see in the house. Be careful when using the command to wrangle spiders!

It really depends on the treats. Look up nutritional facts and what it really is made of. From what I've seen and researched they are not good for the cats, they are high in calories. If your cat is over weight I would most definitely stop right away. Your cat will also start to expect a treat every day if you continue the routine. I give my cats maybe 3-5 treats every 2 weeks or so. When that treat pantry is open they come running haha. But seeing your cat isn't young nor old just keep a close watch weight gain, and gum and teeth problems. There is certainly no reason to not give your cats treats if they love them as long as they don't get sick, affect their diet, or have other health issues. Hope I helped.

Hah, I have the same problem as Lisa! Except.. with my mother.
She feels they deserve treats about 2-3 times a day.. but she gives them almost half a bag of this cheap, nasty stuff every time. :/
I generally save treats for training, no matter which animal is involved: They do good, they get a reward; they do bad, they get nada until they get it right. As far as I was always taught, that was the whole point of treats - you're treating someone to something special for doing really good.
'Course, I'm also a bit of a pushover, and if one of them seems kinda down, or someone gets hurt, or something otherwise "traumatic" happens (usually their "survival" in the vet clinic!) - I'll give them their favourite food as a 'treat' (:
But that's about it - I just try to keep them happy and healthy.
(Oh, and typically the training treats are only a couple cat-bite-size pieces of dehydrated meats at a time.)

We have two different treats we give our cats and they get a treat most days. Either they each get a few Greenies (feeding guidelines are on the package) or they get a few pieces of a high quality cat food different than the high quality food they eat. The Greenies are because they're the best thing on the market for their teeth (clinically proven to reduce plaque and tartar and freshen breath) . They're the only "treats" I buy. The cats look on the other cat food as a treat because they don't get it all the time. This way everything they eat is healthy for them but we still get to "treat" them.
We aren't training our cats for anything so they get treats just because. :-)

They know where the Temptation treats are and will sit in front of the cupboard asking. They only get 2 treats per day.

My hubby & I argue everyday about this one, our cat is over-weight because of him. 18 lbs! I say 2x's a day as a reward, 3-4 pieces each time, for an avg. Cat, rocco goes thru a whole bag sat/sun when my husbands home, its not healthy for them, that's our job as pet owners, to keep them healthy and provide a safe environment, right?
