Is it hard to trim cat's nails by yourself?

I have been taking my cat to Petco for nail trims for almost 2 years and hes been so good. We always got out fast and he never gave them any trouble. Now for the past few months he has been fighting it. He gives me a hard time getting in the carrier and gives groomer a hard time and has been muzzled twice. and a few times they needed me to hold him.

Today was the worst he was really fighting it. Im wondering if I should just learn to do them myself but Im by myself with him and not sure if I can do it alone.

Im not sure what set him off. I know one time I took him there were several dogs being groomed and the groomer dropped the metal door from the carrier. Im not sure if thats what set him off or he got hurt or hes just smart enough to know whats going on now.

I like going to Petco cause its a very short drive and theres usually nobody in there. Vet is further away (more stressful trip) plus theres always dogs in there. I figure Petco is the best for us all as far as stress goes.

Update:

haha didnt notice the title was messed up. Said cat musta stepped on kb

I may buy some clippers and take him to vet next time to get trimming advice and try it myself. At least he has white paws and his nails are much easier to see. My other cat is a gray calico and has dark paws except for on back pinkish one. Im way too scared to cut her nails myself. She was always more skittish but Runty was so easy before taking him anywhere.

Saving gas doing them myself is a plus too because I waste a drive since nail trim is the ONLY thing I could do at one time. I dont wanna leave him in the carrier any longer than necessary or in the car alone and stores dont like you bringing them in.

I read some advice about petting and massaging their paws when they are relaxed so they get used to me touching paws

It's not hard at all. Basically, you just have to cut as close to where the pinkish bit in the nail as you feel comfortable with. If you cut the pinkish bit it'll bleed and it'll be painful for the cat.

He may just be stressed from going to the groomers...some cats are easy to clip their nails and other are not. One of my cats will sit on my lap and let me do it...the other I have to catch when he is asleep and just do it gently...it usually works, so I would try to do it when he is sleeping.
