"Code Geass", as someone said. It's a pretty good strategy/sci-fi/action anime. It's about the "what-if" scenario of England going back to its Imperialist roots and taking countries over again, one of them being Japan. Where it gets a bit weird is that England's weapon of choice is mechas.
"Durarara!" is an original title - it's a bit like Code Geass, but replace the sci-fi with supernatural, and it has a heavy emphasis on mystery. It follows the lives & backstories of a handfull of people - plus Celty, the Irish mythological creature - and slowly reveals how they're all intertwined.
"Karas" is a movie series that should be on every anime fans "want" list. The long & short of it is that a gangster who died in a knife fight was brought back by a spirit to kill a coven of monsters (kinda like vampires), the leader of which controls an army of these monsters that are half-machine, half-demon. They're terrorizing both the human world & the spirit world, so they must be stopped.
"Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" - political psycho-drama at it's finest. Don't watch this if you like to laugh; has some funny bits here or there, but it's purely an adult, serious, intellectual anime. It has a manga adaptation, but it's completely unrelated to anything you'll see here.
"Samurai Champloo" - before I saw this, I laughed at the idea of Japanese hip-hop. Throw in samurai sword fights & you've got yourself a winner.
"Witch Hunter Robin" is exactly as it sounds; there is an orphan teen girl from a convent named Robin, and she's recruited by a mysterious society to hunt "witches" - beings with supernatural powers that pose a threat to society. The story also deals with morality, since they can't always control their power and aren't really at fault for the damage they cause. Art style & tone is very close to "Ghost in the Shell: SAC", so it might be by the same people.
"Afro Samurai" is voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, so there's not a whole lot that can go wrong there. And it's based on a true story; there actually was a black samurai (look it up)!
And I recommend "Gundam Wing" and "Gundam 00". They both have different plotlines - not to mention being separated by 10 or 15 years (Gundam Wing came out in the 90's) - but I'm sure you know what a Gundam is. I'm sure there's a manga for one or both of these out by now, but "Gundam" is a anime-only title - any comics released are nearly always just franchise tie-ins.

Code Geass and Durarara!!
When I saw this, I immediately thought "Guilty Crown" but then I thought a bit more and after the first 14 episodes it's no longer good or decent.

Code Geass didn't have a manga right? That was pretty awesome. I've just started R2 and it seems even better!

college, and the reality i don't have sufficient time to get carry of or watch the shows i favor to observe on line. That, and that i don't have the time and money to bypass manga/anime procuring. besides, this is demanding to locate them the position I stay. So uncultural, my city is!
