Pre-approved Credit cards.?

When you are pre-approved for a credit card, do they still do a credit check on you?

Yes. What the card company has done is go to the credit bureaus and ask them to send them a list of everyone who has a score in a certain range, lives in certain zip codes, plus many other criteria. They pay for this list, and you can register with the credit bureaus to not be included on any of these lists. This does not count as an inquiry on your account when you are selected for a list.

They then send the mailing out. If you accept their offer, they will check at that time to make sure there has not been any material change in your credit profile. You could have had a large judgment or tax lien show up in the meantime, or other things like that.

    Pre Approved Credit Cards Canada

These "pre-approved" offers are meaningless phishing expeditions by the CC industry. They performed a soft inquiry on your credit profile to see if you could be a potential card holder with them. This soft inquiry does not affect your credit score. Your credit profile does not reveal your income or expenses.

Then if you fall for their offer and apply for the card, your score will take a minor hit whether you are really approved or not. When you actually apply for the card, you generate a hard inquiry. Any hard inquiry is generated whenever you apply for a loan or credit. Yes, the will then do a credit check and compare your credit profile with your income and expenses to see if they will issue you a card..

Yes preapproval is a very broad look at your credit. It could mean you can get $200 of credit or $10,000. Once you apply they will run it and then determine how much you actually get
