Mossberg 500 or Remington 870?

Both are extremely reliable guns that will probably go down as some of the most influential shotguns of the 20th century. Which gun do you prefer?

I myself shoot a Mossberg 535, a variant of the 500 with a 3.5 inch chamber.

Update:

Nathan: Yeah, the 535 has an aluminum receiver that can take anything up to a 3.5 inch load. That being said, I mostly shoot 2 3/4 inch Lightfields. I tried shooting 3's and 3.5's but really unless you're shooting shotshells there isn't enough of an advantage to justify the MASSIVE increase in recoil.

Nearly blew my shoulder out when I fired a 3.5 magnum slug.

Depends on what purpose the shotgun serves..... Hunting?.... Either / or... Both are fine shotguns....

Home defense? --- ONLY consider a Mossberg 500...... Here are the technical details why.....

    http://jth8260.tripod.com/870.html

For hunting feathered critters I use a Mossberg 835 Ultimag........ For deer a Remington 870 slug gun..... For home defense I have a Mossberg 500 8 shot Persuader 12 guage pump... It hangs on the back of the bedroom door..... This is the one gun I truly trust my life with.... Remington makes great guns.... But if some goon squad wants to invade my home them Mossberg all the way!.....

Aahhhh, the controversy of the a while. I truthfully have owned the two, right this is how I wreck it down. The mossberg 500 worked wonderful with production facility a lot that werent a sprint swollen, and for the 1st few thousand rounds. After that the action have been given particularly loose, and the extractor arm began turning loose of shells interior the barrel. After possessing that gun i bought a Rem 870 exhibit. I now very own 3 870's and characteristic yet to positioned on one out. That outdated exhibit has probably shot over 10,000 rounds, each and every thing from steel shot 2's to eights for quail and has yet to enable me down. I truthfully have not replaced any areas, basically stored it sparkling and oiled. If I have been you i'd spend the greater $35 and get the rem.

    Mossberg 509A1.

That's the military/police version, heavy barrel, all metal inside, built to last forever.

there isn't a true one versus the other answer to this question, as it is personal preference, just like comparing ford and chevy pick up trucks.

that being said, i like Remington over Mossberg because Mossberg never made the wingmaster or an aesthetically pleasing shotgun in my opinion.

they are more or less the same thing. they work exactly the same only real difference is the safety is o the top on a mossberg and a 870 will accept mag extension without any problems, i have a mossberg 500 and its never let me down, honestly i dont prefer one over the other and 3.5 inch magnum rounds are just stupid. not even fun to shoot. my benelli took them and they hurt. 00Buck and 2 3/4 slugs are all that is needed.

I'll just take a Mossberg 500. Remingtons are nice, and I wouldn't turn one down, but I simply prefer a Mossberg.

I prefer Remington myself. Although i have had a couple of good Mossbergs and for an inexpensive gun they are pretty decent, i find that overall Remington makes a better quality gun.

I'm a Remington guy. I like them better for some reason, especially the wood ones. That's just me. Mine's an express 12ga 3 in chamber

    You're running a 3.5 inch chamber?

Remington 870 all the way... Remington is known for making good Inexpensive and reliable. I have had problems with mosbergs but never with Remington's. There is a resin swat teams and other law enforcement people use remingtons and beneliis... I would go with a beneli or remington. Beneliis are my favorite never had a problem
