    What happened? Oh and go clean your wound. If he was not attacking you and he bit you and let go (considering his age) I would say no. It sounds like he is old and you may have scared him. I would call the vet that you use and ask the vet for advice. Find out what is going on with your dog. Don't kill him because he bit you. Think about it, you said he was a big dog. If he wanted to hurt you, you would be severely injured, there would be multiple bites and it could be a lot worse.

    How old is, "quite old".

    Why did the dog bite you 5 years ago?

    Perhaps the dog is in pain, or is having vision problems.

    Maybe you should consider taking the dog to the Vet to see if it's a physical problem.

    Then again if you are teasing or tormenting an old dog, perhaps he's becoming less then than tolerant.

    Has this dog bitten anyone else over the years?

    By the information (actually the lack of detail) you have provided, Putting the dog down seems to be inappropriate.

    It really depends on why he bit you. If you were provoking him and ignored his warning signs(growling, licking his lips a lot, trying to get away, etc.) then obviously its your fault. If he just out of the blue bit you for no reason, then yeah maybe you should talk to your parents about the well being of your family and the dog and consider putting him down.

    I've only been bitten by any of my dogs one time, and that was because I ignored the warning signs he gave me. Did he get in trouble? No, it was my fault. I was doing something he didn't like and I thought it was funny, so I kept doing it even when he growled softly at me. Have I done it since then? Nope. That was my wake up call that I needed to pay better attention to my dogs body language, and stop doing something when they are obviously uncomfortable.

    Its all about reading your dog. I'm sure you, like me, didn't acknowledge the signs he was giving off that he was uncomfortable, so he bit you to get you to stop. Bet you won't do that again (;

    Hi Kyle the question you need to ask yourself is "am I going to be able to trust him again" Also have a good think about did you do something to him to that may have caused to to bite you? If you are still very keen to keep him maybe you should take him to the Vet and have him checked as he may have a pain somewhere and thought you where causing it. It is a very hard decision but I am sure you will make the right one. All the best for a speedy recovery as well.

    Senior dogs can develop problems that will cause them to bite. Their eyesight can start to fade hearing too and if they are approached and startled they will sometimes bite. There can be some senility too, the dog can get confused. I would have him evaluated by a vet. Treat your wound carefully , do not allow young children around him.

    Usually the answer should be yes, but is there a reason behind the bite? Or was it a purposeful aggressive bite? Depending on the reason behind the bite could be the choose you might have to make. There also might be medical reasons behind the bite. Look into the incident a little and then make your decision.

    I don't know I wasn't there to witness the bite or your teasing the dog to make it bite you. It's your dog why would you tease the dog so he'd bite you. In many states it's a death warrant for the dog. You are the one who should feel bad, not your dog. When he is no more perhaps you'll grow up some to realize how bad you behave..

    NO he should not be put down. There maybe a reason why he bit you. You could put a mussel on his mouth and try to find out why he did that. Take him to the vet to see if he has a diesase that may have caused him to bit. And make sure you treat your wound correctly.

    Well what were the circumstances?

    Is the dog human-aggressive? Or did you provoke him yourself?

    If you're going to ask a bunch of strangers online to decide the life or death fate of a dog, the least you can do is provide the details.
