I am diagnosed as schizophrenic, you mention a very small number of the symptoms i experience.

The voices are scary i know, but you still sound like you are in touch with reality.

Perhaps it will pass as you reduce your stress, if not seek help.

PS I'm told it's very normal for ANYone to hear voices whilst going to sleep.

  • I hate to tell you this, but it is probably Schizophrenia.

Now, to get this out of the way right off the bat: It is a common misconception that schizophrenia is the same as Disassociative Identity Disorder (multiple personality disorder), but this is NOT true. It is also NOT TRUE that all schizophrenics hear voices that tell them to do bad things.

That out of the way, there are two types of symptoms of schizophrenia: Positive, and Negative symptoms. People with this disorder often have both, but may also be diagnosed if they have only one type.

"Negative symptoms" are called this because they are the LACK of something that is usually there, this includes "flat affect" which is lack of emotions, an all consuming emptiness that generally causes suicidal feelings.

"Positive symptoms" are called this because they are the ADDITION of something that is not really there. This can be Hallucinations, and/OR Delusions. "Hallucinations" can be audible (voices, sounds, whispers) or visual (anything from simple flickers, sparkles, or shadows to complex people/animals/creatures/monsters/demons) and unfortunately both are usually dark and frightening if they're more decipherable than vague, and "Delusions" are incorrect beliefs (such as the belief that the government is out to get you) and are usually paranoid in theme.

Along with these symptoms, schizophrenics who are more severe also frequently have racing thoughts and sometimes talk with what is referred to as "word salad". This can be a string of incomprehensible words (often rhyming) or just a series of sentences that are only very loosely related to the subject at hand. Such an example might be "I was in the church and I heard this bell, dwell, hell, smell, fell on the floor, isn't that funny?".

Unfortunately "flashes of light", "dark figures" and "voices" are all trademark signs of moderate Schizophrenia, you're practically a textbook case. Also allow me to guess: are you between the age in which you hit puberty and your mid-to-late 20's? And did you recently experience a change (such as going to a new school, moving, going to college, getting married, etc.) or have a major life stressor such as death in the family? Generally Schizophrenia is triggered during this age group, buy a factor such as these (though only in people with the predisposition for it in there genes). It can happen sooner than that, or later, and sometimes without an apparent cause, but this is often the case.

Schizophrenia is something that can be repressed with anti-psychotics that help to regulate the amount of dopomine in your brain, but it isn't something that can be cured; you'll need to take them for the rest of your life. What's good is that you haven't experienced any negative symptoms yet, as those are often far more difficult to repress, and you're lucky if you catch on to what's going on early, before you become worse and start to see and here more vivid and malevolent things. Taking anti-psychotics will help keep this from ever happening to you, and make life manageable again. Without them you will only spiral deeper. I'm sorry.

Source(s): I'm far from an expert, but I've been through 4 different college level psychology classes (two of which were advanced abnormal psychology courses) and I've taken a personal interest in this disorder. I've read quite a few case studies, and have seen a few specials on it as well. There was one documentary case study video we watched in class (I can't find it on youtube but I know it's there and I'll update if I find it) of a 19 year old boy who says almost exactly what you do that was was diagnosed with schizophrenia, except he had negative symptoms too and had tried to commit suicide at one point.

High anxiety and stress can cause auditory and visual hallucinations, or hallucinations of any of the five senses for that matter.

If you were going crazy you wouldn't be concerned, you would be completely caught up in delusion. As long as you sense that somethings not right - you are sane.

The only advice i can give is perhaps`s you ought to see your doctor. there has to be a logical explanation why you are experiencing this. People for year`s have shunned me due to my Epilepsy when having a fit, ignorance ignorance of faulty wiring in the brain, so keep your chin up i`m sure it will be sorted out soon.

    Agree with Jody.

You are sane to even question it.

Stress and lots of time on your hands can cause the mind to play various tricks on you.

    You will be fine.

If you are still worried then speak with a doctor.

In psychology its called schizophrenia... its voices that tell you to do bad things usually and you'll have hallucinations and delusions... I don't really think your experiencing this... unless those voices are telling you to harm yourself...

if it is not that i believe in ghost too..
