Letters of references?
I am in need of a change of environment in my career. However, I really do not want my current employer to know that I will be applying elsewhere just incase I do not get the position. However...the problem is many jobs request a letter of reference from your direct supervisor. Therefore, how does one secretly apply for a new job without letting their employer know that they are ready for a change? Especially since the potential employer will be calling in for a reference?
Hopefully this makes sense. Would love some feedback on what other people have done.
The potential employer requires 3 current letter of reference from different supervisors. They are still old school just because they get TONS of applications and they use the letter of reference to screen candidates initially. I could possibly get 2 letter of reference but I know the employer would like a letter from the main boss.

It's 2012, few employers will ask for a letter of recommendation = why? because too many potential employees have forged them and they are no longer worth anything.
The future employer will CALL for a reference. How you handle this is ask the potential employer to not call your current employer until you have accepted a formal offer of employment. The offer will be contingient on a successful reference check.

Just be honest when you talk to potential employers. Let them know you currently have a job and don't want to let them know you are looking. Most of them will understand.
