Why is my cat so fat?

I have a spayed 2 year old female cat and she is just plain fat. I havent weighed her but maybe 15 lbs and she looks like she should be a small cat. I don't know why she is so heavy though. She does get free fed but Only at night before bed and she shares the food with another cat. I only give them about a cup- a cup and a half to share. I'm not even feeding them a fatty food. It's a high quality, higher protein dry food. It's called Acana Pacifica if you don't believe me. She doesnt seem too lazy to me either. I just don't understand why she is so fat. =/ I do have a laser pointer which she loves but I have to get new batteries. Any suggestions/opinions would be greatly apreciated.

Update:

So I guess they're not "free fed" I misused the term....... They get fed only at night before bed which is what my vet suggested so that they sleep after they eat but are active during the day. Like I said, between the two cats I only give them around a cup+- a day which they share.

She may be eating most of that 1+ cup of food and the other cat may be eating less. Try to sort of see whether each cat ends up eating an equal amount of food. Typically, a female domestic shorthair shouldn't weigh more than 10 or 11 pounds. And should eat about half a cup of food a day. So provided that they actually do eat an equal amount, 1 cup should be sufficient for both of them. It can also depend on how many treats they are given in a day. Don't feed too many treats or any human foods at all. 15 pounds is still not morbidly obese. Whatever you do though, don't suddenly decrease the amount of food. For an overweight cat, losing too much weight in too short of a time can be more dangerous than being obese. So it has to happen over several months.

I would also recommend changing her diet. I looked up Acana Pacifica and it does look like a high quality food, but sometimes some foods just don't work well for some cats. It is grain-free, right? You can find another grain free high quality food that is still higher in protein than Acana. Look for the protein percentage to be at least 40% and look for something with lower fat percentage if you can find it. It's worth switching to something else if all else fails.

Way too much food. Cats that are on high quality foods really only need between 1/8-1/4 cup twice a day (and the 1/4 is for bigger cats). It is fine that you feed them once at night. That is how I feed mine and the vet is fine with it. But I would cut the food back.

Remember-the food companies want you to buy as much of their product as possible.

Cut the food back and I bet in a month or so you will see results!

Your feeding too much. 2 cats don't need 1-1.5 cups. I have not fed kibble in a couple years but I would guess they only need 3/4-1 cup to share. Reduce the food a little at a time so she doesn't lose weight too fast. Its also best to feed in meals and feed each cat separately so you know she isn't eating more than her share. You can also switch to a grain free canned food or raw. Canned/raw is much better than kibble and have less carbs which will help her to lose weight.

My guess is that you're feeding too much food. If you're feeding according to the instructions on the food package, I can almost guarantee that it's too much. Cat food companies are notorious for instructing to feed too much -- I'm guessing it's because the more cats eat, the more food you'll have to buy -- and the more food you have to buy, the better their profits are. One thing I wonder, though, is if your other cat is overweight. If both cats are getting the same amount of food and only one is overweight, there might be a medical cause for the weight problem. So I think you should take her to the vet and have her thoroughly checked out.

I personally would not feed right before bed. Sleeping right after you eat is going to help you gain weight, not lose it.

Also when fed only once you panic and eat more.

I would feed them the same amount however I would divide it into 3 meals, morning, afternoon, and night.

Cats are grazers, they normally nibble here and there.

I am familiar with Acana and it is good food you are correct.

It might because you are feeding them too much. Even though you might be feeding them the correct amount according to the package sometimes the food companies say feed the more then they should eat where you have to buy more food. Hope this helps.

you are feeding your cat too much. Cats are greedy, they will meow and cry for food even when not that hungry; it's like us moaning for chocolate cake when we want it but don't need it. Do not free feed your cat. They must have set meal times and will soon get use to that, they are creatures of habit. Don't feel bad or strict, just cut it right down to 2-3 times per day at similar times and she will have to fit around you, despite her not liking it.

Animals, like people, get heavy when they eat too much for their activity level. Your cat needs far less food or far more exercise.
