Device to detect current flow?

On many good shop vacuums there is an "auto" setting where you can plug in any tool (a table saw for instance). When you turn on the saw, the vacuum "senses" the flow and turns on the suction to get rid of the dust. I am looking for a stand alone switch (relay) that would be plug and play so I can activate a light when a heater is on and I can't think of good search terms.

Use the term "current sensing switched outlet" when you google.

Such gadgetry has been made for various purposes

    and should be available somewhere.

    [Niles Audio offers one.]

Be certain to check the wattage/amperage ratings

for the sensing outlet -- many of them

wouldn't be able to handle a heater.

Actually, for something as simple as a heater,

why not connect a lamp in parallel with the heating element

so you don't need to use a current sensor?
