Hopefully I can help since I was in a pretty similar situation.

I was, and still am a pretty shy guy. It's really hard for me to talk to new people and make friends out of the blue. However, I pushed myself at orientation to sit with new people, try having conversations with them, etc. I ended up making 2-3 friends that have actually become pretty good friends of mine, now 2 years later. Most people make acquaintances at orientation, but don't really keep those people as friends once school starts (at least that's how it always goes at my school). So all you have to do is make it your goal before you leave for orientation to talk to as many people as you can and push yourself to get out there and be somewhat social. You don't have to go crazy, but push yourself a little. Once you accomplish this, you'll be so proud of yourself, trust me.

As for what you do at orientation, I'll describe what my orientation was like since most schools are probably pretty similar.

We started off by checking into our rooms for the night and meeting our roommate for the night (my orientation was a 2 full days, 1 night sleeping in a dorm thing). Then we went to listen to general presentations about the university and to meet our student orientation leaders. The rest of the day was spent playing ice breaker activities (a shy person's worst nightmare, so prepare yourself now....), getting a tour of the campus, and doing online tutorials about how to use the email system, the class selection system, and other online systems that help you with your classes. We met our advisors and had a presentation from them about how to pick classes, etc. That night we saw a little play about being safe and responsible students and then had discussion groups where we were taught about the code of conduct and all that stuff. The next day was pretty much more ice breaker activities, picking classes, more presentations about drugs and alcohol, etc.

Orientation can be fun if you're into the ice breaker activities, but it's really about getting you acquainted to campus, university policies, and helping you to meet new people.

Orientation is usually an all day thing. You meet with new people, teachers, advisors, you go sightseeing and tour the campus, you get to see and meet all the clubs on campus, there are presentations about the campus, and you do spend a lot of time with new people. The people running orientation will have games set up to help you introduce yourself to others, it can be a lot of fun! You just need to think of it as a fresh start! Give yourself a chance to be the fun guy you always wanted to be. You know you can do it!

If you're going to be in Florida you have got to hold cool. I might advocate a pleasant pair of shorts, not anything too quick. You dont look like a brief quick individual so that's not a fear. You also are going to be strolling plenty on an orientation so put on a comfy blank pair of health club sneakers. Wear a blouse that's pleasant however consultant of you. Get a ladies sized jersey and pair it with a brilliant tshirt and positioned your hair as much as hold your neck cool. Most importantly, have amusing!
