If you are interested in spiderman I suggest going to the 'essentials' series these include a number of comics and annuals. I suggest getting newer ones because getting into the new spider-man comics comes with the added advantage of monthly releases and new storylines although if you haven't read any comics or watched any tv series/ movies you probably won't care about that. There are also volumes which contain 49 comics. However the original ones can cost quite a lot.
Gwen Stacey dies in the amazing spider-man#121 but the full story carries on to #122 and the effects are felt for longer than that because of the way she dies. Venom the character appears in the amazing spider-man #299 but the actual symbiote suit appears in #252 I think. However these comics are sought after so you might wanna look at the new marvel digital comicbook base to see if you can get them.

Amazing spider man 121, death of gwen stacy. Look for trade paperbacks. But theres a series called "The Essential (insert title of marvel comic series here)" and you get 25 issues per book. Theyre black and white but theyre inexpensive. If you want to just catch up thats the start. They also have entire collectios on dvd's. Years of comics as data you can read on your computer.
