Does anyone have any good ideas on how to give a cat a pill?
That tastes extremely bitter? I've tried twice now, and he will just start foaming and trying to get it out. I've tried giving him something that tastes good first, and it didn't work. I've held his mouth closed for about a minute and he'll hold it in his mouth until I let go. Any ideas on a better way to do this next time? :/

sometimes you can find a pill crusher at the dollar store, crush the pill and dissolve it in milk or put it over a little tuna. You can also wrap it up in some tasty chicken or ham. Petsmart and Petco also sell treats that have a hole in them specially for pills.

My sister and I use to do it together. I'd hold the cat and open it's mouth and she'd shove it in the back. Sort of throw it. And then I'd clamp it shut and I'd hold the mouth shut until I felt the cat swallow. Of course we were just stupid teens at the time so maybe that's not the best way. You could try giving it inside a treat and they may swallow it whole without knowing.

This may sound cruel, but it's how I taught myself. You put the cat on a slippery surface so that is trying so hard for footing that it cannot scratch you. You take one hand and put it being his head and squeeze the sides of his jaw to make him open his mouth wide. Then, with your free hand you shove the pill as far down the cat's throat as humanly possible. The cat will be trying so hard to regain it's footing and trying to breath that it will momentarily forget that it could actually bite your finger off if it so desired......................
Actually, and this is fact, a cat can't bite with a finger shoved down it's throat.
...................... And then you let the cat go to run off and sulk somewhere. There is no danger of the cat coughing up the pill; by this time it WILL have swallowed it to keep from choking to death.

I had the hardest time getting my cat to take her pills but finally found what works. take a syringe and cut the tip of it off so its completely open. take wet cat food and put a little of it in the syringe, take the pill put it in the syringe, then more wet cat food on top of the pill so its in the middle. Then hold your cat tightly and open its mouth. put in the syringe then hold your cats mouth shut for a few seconds, sounds mean but your pretty much giving your cat no choice other than to swallow. good luck!

This may sound cruel, but it's how my vet taught me. You take one hand and put it being his head and squeeze the sides of his jaw to make him open his mouth wide. Then, with your other hand, toss the pill as far back in his throat as possible. Close his mouth, then run your finger down his throat to encourage him to swallow. It's the only way I can get my kitten to take his pills!

I've had the same issue. I just mashed up the pill to a semi powder substance and I mixed it in with a SMALL amount of flavorful wet food... I hope this helps... best of luck to you :)

With your thumb and first finger put them on both sides of his jaw. When you 'pinch' them together his mouth will open. Then project the pill so it goes in past the tongue. He will have to swallow.

Either put it in his food or wrap it with turkey(:

Maybe you could mash it up with some tuna?
