Does a combi boiler need a room thermostat fitted?

Just moved into a house with a new combi boiler. I have read the instruction manual and this refers to use of the wall thermostat IF FITTED. There is a wall thermostat in the hall but it looks like an old one and a power test shows it is dead - no power to it. However, all the radiators have individual thermostats fitted so could it be that the wall one is redundant and not required,

Exactly what I did when having a new combi fitted , I had the wall thermostat disconnected and individual thermostat valves on each radiator . The wall thermo was still in place but not connected, One radiator has to be on at all times when central heating selected so thats the bathroom one that has no thermostat .

The following is what I know from having a condenser boiler; perhaps there are reasons why a combi may be different.

Without a wall thermostat, the boiler will always run when its timer is on, even in hot weather. This is surely not what you would want, but in any case the water needs to circulate to somewhere.

Just to reinforce what Knownout said above - DO make sure that there is a radiator which is always open. If there is not one without a thermostat, better to remove the stat than to rely on it being left open and functioning correctly.

A working room stat is a good idea. A combi boiler measures the returning water flow temp so it will switch off, If the rad stats have all closed because the rooms are warm enough the returning water will be hot and wont take long to return so the boiler will switch off. BUT As said the bathroom rad will get hot regardless (no stat) and it does use gas to heat the water to find out is the house cold or not.

I would have a stat fitted if I were you, it saves money in the long run.

We have a combi and room stat, and rad stats (TRV's) the room stat is set for 20 degrees, so at the minute the boiler never comes on unless we turn on a hot tap, we save gas this way as the boiler never comes on unless required.

Yes its not that much gas we save, but over time it adds up.

All boilers require a wall thermostat regardless of if they have thermostatic radiator valves.

How else is the boiler to know the house is warm and it can shut down?!!! Otherwise it will

keep heating the pipes in the heating circuit wasting gas.

There may be no or little voltage at the thermostat as this may be being used as a voltage free

thermostat which just acts as a switch at low voltage 24v DC usually.

Rotate the stat dial and check if the boiler pump stops / diverter valve ports to closed position.

    Check stat for DC voltage

If stat is duff buy radio sat and receiver unit -

I have downloaded the instructions for this programmer and you are correct in what you say. Building regs. state that you must have time and temperature control to heating. You would have to remove this control and fit a basic timer and mechanical thermostat to be able to control your heating as you have stated.

the old one is probably dead. the building regs say a room stat should be fitted to all new installations but if you can live without it just remove it and plaster over the hole in the wall next time you decorate. its no big deal seeing as you have thermo rad valves and it wont harm your new boiler. you can of course have a wireless roomstat fitted if you prefer but personally i wouldnt bother

Source(s): if you fitted a new stat n the hall every time the door is opened in cold weather the boiler would fire up so i wouldnt bother... plumber.
