My lonely kitty, adopt another?

I have a cat whom I rescued about a year ago. She's maybe a year and a half old, I'm not sure. Anyway she's been the only pet cat for this whole time. Well lately she seems bored and even sad. I'm thinking that maybe she's lonely. What can I buy or do that's exciting for a cat? I forgot to mention this is the first kitty I've owned (I've always had dogs) so I'm not sure on their mannerisims. I've thought about adopting a kitten but I'm worried about a few things. Since my cat has never been around another cat I'm worried she may "act out" being an only kitty she's NEVER showed any aggression, never hissed, never scratched, never ever done anything of the sort. She doesn't "spray" to mark territory or anything else. These are things I'm worried may happen if I bring another kitty into the picture. Am I over reacting or is this a likely situation? Should I not even worry about this and she will be fine if I just leave things the way they are now?

Update:

I'm not to worried about her trying to run away, she's only been outside about 5 times in her life. I'm for sure going to get her fixed even if I don't get another cat. One more question though... I also forgot to mention she will be experiencing a change in 2 months. I'm expecting a new baby in October. Maybe I should wait until after the baby to introduce a new kitty?

More than likely she would appreciate the company. New kitten equals time and patience, but in their own way the cats do work things out.

I had the same issue as you with my 1 year old female. I got her 2 kittens (brothers, they were few weeks old at the time). At first (as you said never been around any other animal) she hated them, hissing and hitting them on the head. I kept them separated and in less than a week she was fake nursing them :) (she was spayed and never had babies but she acted like a mother and they were suckling even though she didnt produce anything). Anyways, a year later, they are all best of friends and now I never worry about being gone for long hours of the day anymore.

It is a good idea and you will be saving more lives too :)

First you need to take her to a vet, to make sure the problem isn't physical. Sometimes changes in cats' behaviour is a result of them being in pain or ill (sometimes it's just that they're planning something - my cat once spent three days acting all sad and quiet: turns out she was stalking a persistent sparrow which she then threw at my feet as a present). Still, have her checked out, please.

Next, make sure your cat is neutered - this will make it much more likely that she will accept a new cat in her territory. Ask the vet what he/she thinks about the idea.

If you decide to adopt another cat, make sure it's a kitten, and the same gender - another female. Keep them apart for the first few weeks, but make sure to mix their scents (by first stroking one, then the other, without washing your hands in between) - this is so they will get used to each other.

    Good luck!

i think you should get a friend for your kitty, animals are meant to have company. As long as you can afford it financially and time wise.

I've had cats for last 15 years and gone through the process of introducing a new kitty many times. You cant predict exactly how your old kitty will react to the new one, but sticking to the usual routine you have now with old cat, will help ease the introduction of new kitty. My 3yo (1yrs at the time) male wanted to kill a kitten i got 2 years ago, then 4 months ago when i got another kitten the 3yo was the perfect new brother.

I had a cat from kitten, and we adopted a stray who was very hungry and was not micro chipped to take her back to an owner. We let her stay at our house but my other cat felt extremely threatened and left home. When they both lived here we literally had to split the house up so one kitty would belong upstairs and another would live downstairs.

It wasn't fair on either of them, the stray cat we planned to give to the animal sanctuary up for adoption, but before this happened my order cat ran away :(

I WOULD NOT recommend getting another cat. Cats are extremely territorial and will either fight or leave home if they don't get along, and they most likely won't unless they knew each other from kittens.

    Good luck x

Cats are very sociable animals and another cat may keep her company. Just remember that they propably won't get along at first. It may take some time, maybe even a few weeks. Try getting a cat around the same age and since she is female, get another female. (males are terratorial) Just remember to give it time..........

a million. You under no circumstances comprehend how 2 cats will artwork mutually. I actually have 5 cats. each and each has a diverse relation to each and each of the others, which has no longer something to do with sex and age. My male cat loves between the ladies individuals, and yet another male, yet hates lots of the others. between the ladies individuals is in love with the male, friends with between the ladies individuals, yet no longer with the others, there are some she accepts and some one she completely hates and so on. 2. on the initiating he will react badly to ANY cat, small or large. It needs staying power, he would take in to three months until eventually he tolerates it. he's used to being an purely toddler. 3. on the genuine they arrive across advice on a thanks to tolerate one yet another, and with some they develop into friends and they have an excellent time. yet they'd under no circumstances develop into friends. nevertheless, it truly is a feline companion and it truly is an interest for them once you're away. 4. i might want to recommend to get him a touch lady. he will hit her before each little thing, you ought to no longer leave them on my own mutually for a million-2 weeks, and before each little thing shop her in yet another room and purely deliver them mutually at the same time as they devour, yet then he would take her as his companion.
