B&A: A dream walk in your library?

Hey guys :)

Picture your dream home library and describe it to me. For example:

- would it be grand with towering mahogany book cases or cosy or lots of colour and modern crazy new chair in the centre

- would it have all new books in perfect condition, or dog-eared paperbacks from charity shops

- would it have pictures and quotes painted on the wall (I would so love to paint the quote: 'I have always imagined that Paradise as a kind of library' by Jorge Borges on my wall)

- would it be off room from your bedroom or right at the top of the house or down in the basement?

Look forward to your answers :)

" My Library Walks With Me "

    - That's how I would describe my dream library !

No, it's not the title of a song as far as I know but I would love to have a 'library' in every & any room I wanted whenever I wanted at the spur of the moment ... We already have wall-mounted book cabinets in every room but you can't have an entire collection. So I wish some sort of invention would create that virtual-to-real library that walked wherever I went ;-D

While I love the English-style wall-lined book shelves, I would love to have a modern device that immediately locates The book I want to refer to/from without me having to go through the vast array of books ;-) Click of the fingers & it's there ! Or if I could find Aladdin's lamp & genie ...Yay.

Definitely old-style layout, though cozy & well-lit with a grand view of a green & flowery garden ! And a range of seating options, including something to lie down on - I know it shouldn't be done, but I can't help but read lying down ;-P So, a little sofa or a lover's seat with an afghan or throw & cushions. At least one cozy corner/nest in a bay window. Obviously, the library would be at ground level.

I like to keep my books dog-ear-free. But I do have a few from the 'flea' market that have something special inscribed from the giver to the receiver. Pity the person who got the gift didn't treasure it enough to want to hold on to it. I would love to collect such 'ungrateful' "treasures". And I would also display Prominently, my paperback copy of "War & Peace" half of which came off unglued -- proof that I've read the book from start to finish ;-)))

As I read or later when I 'mentally digest' what I've read, I would like to have some automatic mechanism that can Transcribe my thoughts into hard print or digital output as concise summaries & thoughts & ideas ; or the gist/thread of non-fictional logic/chapters ... I'm too lazy to do it myself & later, all those crazy or wonderful ideas & threads get lost.

I prefer serene landscapes, a world map, scrolls from ancient cultures or hieroglyphics, to adorn the walls. I like the way my hubby's decorated the walls of our study+library, including a couple of my own works, & I wouldn't change that. He's also got some knknickknacksround. And, of course, our artificial tree in one corner. With bay windows tho', one can choose real plants & herbs. I may add a collage-type collection of quotes, greeting cards, pictures, etc. all related to books or literary characters, writers, etc.

I'd keep a huge stack of assorted bookmarks in a crystal vase too.

A vase holding real flowers - the scents wafting through the room.

No television, but a music system to accompany reading. Perhaps a computer altho' that may prove distracting at times. No telephones either.

But a singing bird [artificial or recorded bird-songs coz I hate it when birds are caged].

As an adjunct, I wouldn't mind a little viewing room that has a collection of movies Based on literary works/books.

Writing materials, painting materials, arts-n-crafts stuff, ......How Would I Ever Leave This Room ????!!!!

May all our wishes come true :-))

My dream home library would be a combination of old and new.

I love going into libraries that are in older houses. I like the smell of the wood and the paper and the ambiance.

My dream library would have lots of light and space, but still be cozy. I would have wooden shelves and soft armchairs to snuggle and read in. It would have the feel of an old library, like it's been there for years and will be there for years,

I would have it in a house type place with lots of windows to sit near. The book shelves wouldn't tower over me (because I'm short and I hate not being able to reach books easily) and be crammed together but wouldn't be to far apart because there would be lots of them.

There would be areas amongst the book shelves, not separate from them, where I could read, and cushions where I could sit on the floor in an aisle and read parts of books if I wanted them (because I like to do this).

The books would be a combination of old and new. Not ragged, but well loved.

There would be some quotes and pictures on the wall, but not ones in bright crazy colors that would be distracting, maybe photos of places or family. I would rather have windows than pictures.

I would have different rooms for different types of books so it was like going on a journey to find books...and I would paint quotes over the doorways.

Basically it would be a combination of my favorite libraries in my town. There's a small, old one near my college in an old house that I love the smell and feel of, and there's a big new one near my house that has a wall that is a huge window which provides lots of natural light so that they don't have so many fluorescent lights. Basically, I would take the tiny old house one and make it a little less creaky.

I would make it between my bedroom and the kitchen, I like to read while I cook/eat and while I get ready for bed and for the day.

Oh my God, I love this! So I would be a millionaire! First, I'd have a really cool door in my room that spins and leads to another room (like a magical portal), that's really a HUGE, HUGE library!

The walls would be like 100 feet tall. On them would be awesome, famous quotes. And the shelves would be massive! Towering above us. The shelves would actually be classic mahogany because I absolutely love those kinds! There would be amazing architecture! Like gargoyles sticking out of the edges of the shelves! There would be ladders against the shelves. I love those!

There would also be a man with a tailored suit, playing the piano somewhere. =D

Gosh! I am so dreaming right now. *sighs*

P.S. This is one of my favorite libraries in the world! It's the library of Dublin University. Amazing!

2 hours would not be long enough. I'm the kind of reader where I can sit my butt down and read all day long. So being locked in a library would be like heaven to me. And how come school could never be this exciting for me? I'd love to come home and have my mom ask that same question, 'How was school today?' 'Oh, you know, some armed man was robbing houses up and down the street near the school. The principle feared he'd come into the school and start robbing all the students and teachers. So we went into lock down. But hey! I got to spend a couple hours reading in the library!'

-I always imagined it would be cozy but at the same time grand. I'd want walls of shelves that required a moving ladder to get to the tops. To make it more cozy I think it would be cool to have a loft above the shelves. Up there would cozy seats and bean bag chairs. Below the loft I'd imagine there to be some couches to sit on, in case I got too lazy to climb up the ladders. I imagine the shelves themselves would be brown but I think the books would bring in enough color.

-I think there would be both. I'd have some books in perfect condition, but many of them would probably look read. I buy a ton of books online and from used bookstores. I like my books looking nice, but I also like it when they look read. They seem more personal that way.

-Yes. I'm not sure what quotes I would choose, but I can easily imagine having some. Pictures would be nice depending on how much wall space I had. I wouldn't want it to look cluttered.

-I would imagine it being at ground level or at the top of the house. Ground level makes the most sense to me, but at the same time, it's hard to imagine a room with a loft downstairs. I'm sure it might be possible, but I am no architect. So upstairs makes sense. Though then I'd hope we wouldn't have any large earthquakes, I imagine a library is extremely heavy to have upstairs.

    Love this!

My dad is currently living with my husband and I and I've been planning on what I am going to do when we get our office back.

A dream library for me is also a dream office/study room so this is what I want to do:

    - Put my comfy chair in a corner with a nice lamp a side table. This will serve as my study spot for reading whether it's homework or leisure. The table will be for my books, notepad and pen, snacks, and drink of choice (usually coffee). During the winter I'll also include my favorite blanket to curl up with.

    - Get a taller bookshelf and maybe eliminate one of the smaller bookshelves.

    - Have more of my images printed and framed so I can hang them on the wall.

    - Maybe...MAYBE put a small coffee maker in there so I have my personal place for evening coffee.

There's probably more to this but it's what I can think of off the top of my head.
