Do cats learn from each other?

I'd like to know if cats learn from each other (if they don't kill each other first). Right now I have an extremely territorial cat. He’s castrated but still, he’s the bully of the neighbourhood. This hasn’t always been the case. We once had 2 cats and they occasionally had a fight, but in general they got along rather well. A bit like 2 brothers =) One of those cats passed away and ever since we only had 1 cat + dogs. The cat we have now knows how to survive. Per example: before crossing a street he’ll look left and right. If we’d get another kitten and we’d manage to have the older cat accepting the kitten, would the kitten be instructed by the older cat? Would it be beneficial for the kitten to go out with the other cat? Or is it more likely the older cat would say “you can cross now” at the moment a truck passes by ;P

I’m really wondering, if cats don’t learn from each other I’m not getting a new kitten anytime soon. Not worth the trouble.

Cat's are usually there own cat, but kitten's will learn from older cats. You just have to get a kitten young enough. 8 weeks is safe, but I would suggest 10 to 12. If the male is that territorial though, I would really suggest sticking to him and the dogs.

Yes, to some extent.. I recently added another cat to my group and he has learned a lot from the others as far as acceptable behavior and such. I have actually seen one of my cats (My eldest, Luna) scold another cat for doing something bad. It all depends on how accepting your cat would be to a kitten and how willing the kitten is to learn. Its not something you should depend on though, especially not as far as looking both ways before crossing the street.

Sure, cats can learn from each other, but most of their learning is from their mother when they are very young I think or it seems. They learn as they go along. I had a cat who got stuck in a tree going after a bird or squirrel. He never went up the tree again.
