rosemary oil on cats?

This is more of a "public service announcement" than a question. Have you ever spilled rosemary oil on your cat? Today I did. I knocked a bottle off the counter and it spattered on my cat. Immediately she started freaking out and running around the house and was hissing at everything that moved. Then she started panting and foaming at the mouth. I looked up what to do online, and didn't find much info which is why I'm posting here. I called my vet, which was closed, so I called an emergency vet which had me call the ASPCA poison control hot line. I didn't have the $65 call in fee on a credit/debit card (silly me was "responsible" and paid all my bills today) so they wouldn't help me. I did try to wash it off with dish soap, but she fought so I couldn't do a very thorough job. She was still panting and very hot. Normally she's very quiet but she was meowing like crazy.

The only option left was to borrow some money and head to a 24 hour vet. They gave her a bath till she was squeaky clean and gave her some medicine in case she ingested any.

Here's the long and short of it (in caps because it's important):

IF YOU GET ROSEMARY OIL ON YOUR CAT TOPICALLY, WASH IT OFF THOROUGHLY. IF IT IS INGESTED YOU SHOULD GO TO A VET FOR MEDICATION.

For the next 24 hours I am to monitor my cat for any neurological/behavioral effects or any breathing issues, but the vet thinks she is going to be okay. So (to make this a Y!A question) did this happen to anyone else? How did your cat react?

Wow, that's so weird. My cat used to kind of like things smelled like Rosemary, she would lick things scented like Rosemary.

I have two adult cats, and BOTH LOVE Rosemary. Fresh, right off the bush. They act as if it were catnip. Strangely enough, catnip does nothing for either. I frequently snip off a few branches, toss them right on the kitchen tiles, and let them have at it.

Essential oils though are a different issue. They are heavily concentrated, and usually treated with assorted harmful chemicals to procure the oils to begin with. I never use or keep them in the house.

All of those sorts of things should be kept away from animals(and children!). Air fresheners as well.

I hope your furry baby recovers!

    Best wishes.
