can dogs eat cat food?

My chiahuaha will only eat our cats dry cat food. We have tried all brands of dog food. Wet and dry. All he wants is the cats food. I'm wondering how harmful it is. He's been living on cat food for over a year now. He seems healthy. Any suggestions?

Yes its harmful over long time - its got too much protein and the dog will end up with early liver/kidney problems. Don't leave food sitting out (canned food is better for both cats/dogs anyway). Feed the dog and cat in separate rooms. Give them about 10/15 mins to eat then take up the food and do not put out more till the next feeding.

I have always been told that dogs can't have cat food but cats can have dog food. Something to do with salt levels

well, cats and dogs need different things for their diet. i dont think it is bad persay, but you should try to give him dog food (mix a bit everyday in with his food until it is just dog food youre giving him).

Eating cat food probably won’t hurt your dog, though it’s best that he doesn’t eat it all the time. Cats and dogs require different diets. Cats are pure carnivores, meaning they typically eat nothing but meat, while dogs are omnivorous, meaning that they eat some plant materials along with their meat.

dogs and cats have different needs for nutrition. cat food is higher quality than dog food so that is why. talk to a specialist.

It is the other way around that is dangerous. Dog food does not contain taurine, which cats need since dogs can synthesize taurine from their diet. Cat food is supplemented with taurine.

But to the point, your dog eating cat food is really giving him the 'wrong' ratio of fats, protein and other components. It would usually give a dog digestive upsets. But your dog seems to be doing all right.

Dog food is usually heavier on carbohydrates, and less on protein then cat food. And the same with fats which cat food has more of.

So I am surprised you do not have a chubby chihuahua.

My dogs do that all the time too, although I mostly try and keep them from doing that. I have heard that it can have some negative effects, but I haven't noticed any as of yet.

I think the main thing is that cat food has a different combination of proteins/nutrients or whatever. As to whether or not it could cause harm? I really don't know.

My dog always eats our cats cat food when we run out of dog food, he's perfectly healthy. Think of it this way, dogs can eat much worse than cat biscuits, they eat all types of gross things. Their stomachs can digest all sorts of junk.

Key word is "seems." Dogs and cats have different nutritional needs, so I would worry that the cat food doesn't have what a dog needs.

I'd suggest placing the cat food where the cats can get it, and the dog can't. Then only offer the dog dog dry/wet food. He might go a few days without eating it, but he will eventually.
