How to make my carpet look new?
My carpet is more then 10 years old and is stating to show wear. I really do not want to rent a steam cleaner to clean it. What could I use to make it look new?

A steam cleaner wouldn't work anyway.. you need an extraction machine to clean it. Steam cleaners just inject hot water into carpets, raising the pile a bit, but thats all. An extraction cleaner like the Rug Doctor will totally revive your carpet. If its a good quality carpet, then 10 years isn't old. You can rent the Rug Doctor in the UK for £20 a day, and if you prepare yourself before so you don't waste time moving furniture etc on the day of the hire, you could actually share the cost with someone else who needs to use it, say half a day each? It is SO worth it.

I don't think you can get your carpet to look like new if it's ten years old. The best thing you can do is have it either professionally cleaned or rent the steam cleaner.
Regular vacuuming is really important because fine particles can get into the fibres and wear then down, fraying them over time.
You can buy the spray cans of foam carpet cleaner or buy carpet cleaner and do it by hand but steam cleaning will give you the best results.

Cleaning it is the first step. REmoving dirt removes the abrasive grit tearing your carpet fibers apart.
After really good vacuuming.....you can try sprinkling baking soda over the carpet, let it sit a few hours and vacuum it up.......problem is many newer vacuums do not want you using any type of powder cleaner as it clogs up the vacuum. Then get a soft tip garden rake.....or a dog brush with soft tips and rake/brush your carpet until the fibers stand upright.
Heavy traffic areas need more attention, more vacuuming, more cleaning that the rest. Eventually you may end up putting throw rugs down the hallsto cover the worn spots or just recarpeting the halls.

Your best solution to rejuvenate the carpet is to hire a professional carpet cleaner who uses truck mounted hot water extraction equipment and also uses a rotary extraction machine. Such machines rotate on the carpet and will out work a person on a wand 100 times over, ask for an RX20 or a Roto Vac 360 for best results. To locate such a pro near you, go to www.iicrc.org. Insist on the rotary extraction machine, if some one says that these machines are to hard on the carpet, he/she is lying. I've been using them for years and have cleaned thousands of carpets with no damage ever witnessed. My customers love the results. If you purchase carpet sometime down the road, ask for Nylon carpet, it is more expensive then Olefin or Polyester, but worth the up charge.

If your carpet is this old
Then it will hard work to make it look good again
I think after 10 years you owe it a good clean
Only by hiring a cleaner will make it look good again
