Does anyone have a really good reason why the USA is so conservative when it comes to Gun Laws?

The USA suffers around 10,000 deaths per year from gun related crime, 17,000 deaths a year from suicide using a firearm, and 800 deaths a year from shooting accidents.

I looked up comparative statistics for France, Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and they are all many times lower. In fact if you add the totals of all these countries together you get the same total population as the USA, but only 670 deaths per year from gun related crime, 3400 from suicide with a gun, and 130 deaths from gun accidents.

This is clearly related to guns being so readily available in the USA so I thought the figures for homicides not related to guns must be comparatively lower in the USA, but it isn't - 5,500 homicides per year in the USA not related to guns and 2,450 homicides in total in the other countries. So it seems like the easy availability of guns in the USA also makes it more likely to be killed with a knife, or a blunt instrument, or anything else.

Can anyone provide a sensible reason why residents of the USA should support any government that tolerates these dismal statistics?

There are many reasons, but the main one is the huge lobbying power of the gun manufacturers. The gun lobby spends millions of dollars lobbying against restrictions on firearms in order to maintain their profits. The US Supreme Court has struck down most limits on lobbying in the name of free speech, while other countries have strict limits.

It is in our constitution, the 2nd Amendment. Our constitution is a brilliant document, if you don't believe me read it. We have the right to protect our lives and property with firearms. Also gun control does not work. Look up Chicago gun control failure, they have some of the strictest gun laws and the highest gun related homicides. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Remember if someone wants to commit a crime, they will find a way to. If you knew someone was possibly armed, would you reconsider committing a crime like robbery, rape, etc? The fact that regular US citizens can carry a concealed firearm (not easy to get mind you, esp in NY where I live), deters crime. Making guns entirely illegal would not only be unconstitutional but would not stop criminals from getting them, it would only stop the good guys from having them.

Ok, so you have proven that France, GB, Germany, Spain, Canada Aussie and New Zealand have gun crimes many times lower...

But what about the crime rates outside of the guns. Obviously you ban guns, the gun rate crime will be lower..

But take into consideration, what weapon they do use instead of guns because human nature hasn't changed and take those statistics, take the crime rate statistics, and then furthermore, look at the fact that their guns are banned yet people still get a hold of them and do all these awful things.

You ban guns I am sure they will just find another weapon like knives and clubs.

Did you know in Britain a man went on a shooting spree for more then an hour....no one to stop him on his horrific journey! Innocent people need to be able to protect themselves..

And also many of those deaths are gang related in the US.

Amanda - First off if the government turns against us, they won't have all the tanks and guns because the military personal won't all be on their side. But anyways that is a scenario I don't think it will come to and that is more based on principle then current situations and need for protection against the government. 2nd, you are brainwashed, take away all the guns and I guarantee you there more scenarios then the BS one you just made up. Plenty of them. 3rd, they didn't misinterpret the constitution, you just only pay attention to the first part.

Look at the answers you got so far. It's a fear-based emotional reaction. They are clinging to an antiquated and misinterpreted Constitutional amendment that was written when the types and numbers of weapons we have today weren't even conceived of. Organizations like the NRA contribute to these irrational fears with emotionally manipulative hypothetical situations like, "What if a Muslim atheist gunman breaks into your home and kills your grandmother and your pet dog in front of you and then steals your TV?" As far as defense against government, if the government decides to rise up against the people, I'm sorry to say, but your handgun is not going to you much good against tanks and military weapons anyway.

Your last sentence betrays your bias, that the only solution to a problem is a government solution.

For better or worse, a democratically elected government reflects the will of the people. Gun culture is so well-established in the United States that you can't just legislate it out. It has to be (and has been) incremental changes that respect the rights of the 99% of law-abiding gun owners.

You should look up the statistics for violent crimes, in-home invasions, and other forms of suicide in those countries. They are much higher than in America.

every timee I read people defending gun ownership, I picture myself a fat man in a dirty, white undershirt and blue jeans with a mullet, standing in front of a pickup truck or a waving american flag, shooting his gun in the air while shouting: " 'merica, f*** yeah"

Source(s): coming from safe country with strict gun ownership laws

The Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America says we can have them. I will fight tooth and nail to keep that amendment and the other 26. This includes the First Amendment, which you are currently exercising.

Get your raw numbers changed to % and it won't look as bad. There are simply more people here than in .. probably all of those countries combined.

And FYI, drunk driving kills more people here than guns. Heart attacks, cancer from smoking ... these things are bigger killers. More people are blugeoned to death with hammers or stabbed to death than shot.

The statistics you see are meant to make it look bad here. It's liberal propaganda and the numbers you see are skewed.
