Why do my cats like to lay on my clothes?

Whenever I leave clothes on the floor, bed, or where ever, my cats ALWAYS lay on them. Even if my fiance has left something where they could reach, they will still pick my clothes over my fiances. Why is this?

It's a combination of things, but mostly involves scent marking. Most people think it's because the clothing is familiar and has the owner's scent on it. It may be endearing to believe our cats love us that much, but actually the opposite is true where scent is concerned.

All your clothes have the cat's own scent on them, but when you wear them or leave the house, that scent fades or is replaced by other smells. So arriving back home & tossing your clothes on the bed, your cat will immediately "repossess" them to get his/her scent back onto the items.

Cats are highly territorial animals; what we'd consider "possessive" in human terms. Whatever they touch or rub up against is THEIRS from that point on. They've put their subtle stamp on it from glands in the chin, neck, tail & paws. Our noses aren't acute enough to even detect it, but a cat interprets a whole different world & variety of information via its sense of smell.

This is why they'll do the same thing with papers lain out. If they do not have the cat's signature on them, that feline will tromp all over to scent mark them... sort of like saying, "This is MINE, that bit's mine, this part over here is MINE, too." True, they also just want our attentions, but the instinctual motivation is scent marking.

There are several possible reasons for this. For one thing, cats like to be near us. They know that if they plop themselves right under our noses, so to speak, they will get attention, and usually good attention. Cats have a need for warmth and security, and this fills their need. They also want to leave their scent on anything that belongs to us because it makes them feel more secure.

Cats also like small spaces, and that might explain why they will pick a small defined area like a folded towel or skirt on a larger area like the bed. It might be just instinct – or it might be that need for warmth that draws them to an added certain texture of material.

Whatever the reason, it's just another fascinating aspect of your cat's behavior for you to observe. So when your kitty is suddenly lying on your newspaper right under your nose, take advantage of this compliment and pay her some attention. The quirkiness of cats is just one of the reasons we love them and find them so fascinating.

I think this is just a typical cat thing, although it isn't just limited to cats. My beagle puppy does the same thing with my clothes. With the dog, I think it's just because my clothes smell like me, and he likes that. Maybe it's the same thing with your cats! Anyways, it isn't anything to be concerned about. Maybe a minor annoyance at times, but nothing abnormal.
