My cat is scared of everything and is getting worse?

I have a cat we rescued as a kitten. He had been hit by a car and had some severe neurological damage. It took him a long time before he could move his back legs again, and he's always seemed different from other cats. He was always rather skittish and has preferred my company over the other members of my family from a young age.

What has me worried is that as of a few months ago he's started getting worse. It seems like the list of things he's afraid of is growing, he rarely comes downstairs, and he constantly has a worried look in his eyes. He seems more and more bothered by sensory stimuli - bright lights and loud noises in particular - and seems to be forming rigid daily routines that he didn't have before. I'm concerned that his mental state may be deteriorating. Could that be the reason for his behavior, or is it something else? And is there anything I can do to help him?

Update:

We have a cat door so our cats can come in and out whenever they want. So I guess he's both an indoor and an outdoor cat ^.^

It could well be related to the neurological damagethat he sustained in the accident. I'm afraid the only person that call tell you that is a vet.

I can't work out if he's an indoor cat nowadays or not but, assuming your family don't mind, it would probably be easier for him to have a litter tray. That way he doesn't have to go out and once in a new indoor routine he may start unwinding a bit.

I'm so glad that he's got you - bless you both x

Howdy, i'm terrified of meeting new men and women too so don't be so difficult on him! That's definitely a good factor in a method as there are a lot of cats that find a new dwelling as they will go to someone after which they feed the cat and then it stays. Maybe you might try with only one person and get this pal or relative to offer your cat it's favorite treat. Get them to do this everytime they come over and then try it with a further man or woman etc.

Aw that's sweet of you guys to save him!

I have a suggestion..I've recently rescued a kitten as well and he doesn't let anyone approach him except for my sister. He will run and hide. I bought catnip you should try buying it and putting it out downstairs and see if he comes down, they love that stuff. Be careful wit letting the cats in and out! Make sure they have frontline or something like that.

develop trust on your cat. let him/her sleep on your bed with you, don't let him/her alone anywhere. he/she will get better soon
