My new cat, Barbara has?
terribly smelly poops. He seems to poop like 4 times a day. Is this normal for a cat? His litter box is in the basement and last night I could smell his poop all the way upstairs in my bedroom. I can put up with a lot from a pet, but I already have an 80lb stinky dog. Is there any way to make the cat less stinky?
He eats science diet and has a "sensitive stomach" according to the humane society, no canned foods. He was just seen by the vet and he's fine.
I'm beginning to see why my pets ended up at the shelter. I have a soft spot for misfits. It's my own fault

poor cat. why the name Barbara?? This is almost as bad as the time a black cat wondered into my house and we kept it but since it had a little white patch under his chin that looked like cocaine, I decided to call him Whitney Houston.

Cats are very environmentally influenced. He could have a slight case of the mud butt just from his nerves. Occassionally my cat drops a bomb so smelly, I have to spray half a can of Glade just to keep from ralphing. Other times it's so subtle that I wouldn't even believe he pooped. E eats the same thing every day too, so it's def not the food (in his case).
Give ol Barbara some time to settle and see if his tummy feels better. And his craps less stinky :)

Note to self: "Sensitive stomach" = animal shelter code words for a cat with smelly crap.
First the dog, now the cat. You're not having much look at the animal shelter are you? Not only have they given you 2 smelly pets, but they have you buying expensive food for both.
I was going to suggest that it could be the food, but you're not buying the cheap stuff so I'm not sure. Animal shelters will always tell you that you should buy the expensive fancy foods for your pet, but you can usually get by with less expensive food so long as you're not buying the extra cheap stuff. Maybe you should try playing around with different foods to see if there is a particular brand that does not cause your cat to be so smelly....

First have the cat checked and treated for worms by your vet. That could be the problem. Second, what are you feeding your cat? Poor quality foods, fish based foods will cause more smells in the litter pan.
Put your cat on a high quality canned and dry food and stick to chicken, lamb, beef, turkey - NO fish and I'm sure it will be better.

Is the cat taking any vitamins? A lot of times the vitamins can make them smell terrible. It definitely has something to do with his diet. Do the worm thing too but I don't think that's what it is.
